Anyone know of a good online organic chemistry class?

Thank you! The Berkley course looks perfect, and it's a little more reasonably priced than the UNE course. Thanks again:)

I had the UC Berkeley intro to organic chem class recommended to me by a fellow RN, and so far it's great! I have finished the homework material (you do your homework on blank white paper and either scan/email as an attachment or fax to the instructor and he grades it then snail-mails it back to you w/corrections). There are 12 chapters/homework assignments and 11 chapters are on the final exam. There is an open-book midterm and web postings in addition. The final exam is worth 40% of your grade....I'm taking it Aug 7, so I'll let you know then how much I really like the class!! Overall it's a better deal than most and Dr. Jalali, the instructor is a pretty awesome guy

Ok, so now I will definitely NOT recommend UC Berkeley's online intro to organic chemistry class....I had a grade of 'B' before taking the final exam (worth 40% of grade) and had to wait over a month after taking the exam (even after many phone calls) to find out that my instructor had failed me with no explanation, no final exam grade, no way to know what mistakes I had made and no way to view exam (unless I fly myself out to California)....the exam had very few questions (think less than 30) for 11 chapters of information, not curved (I know that not everyone does this, but it would have helped in this situation)....and, this really makes me wonder, because when I emailed the instructor asking how I could view my mistakes or find out my final exam grade, he now mysteriously is not teaching the class anymore and it is currently closed while a new instructor makes changes in the course...I am absolutely livid that I have to re-take a different online course now after spending TONS of time, money and wasted energy....I really do hope that this new instructor makes the class better because it was one horrible experience all around:scrying:

I'm doing the UNE course (I like it a lot!) However, as it turns out VCU has the same kind of "course in a box" offering and it's much less expensive. I have a friend taking it now and it sounds very similar. I don't have the link, but I'm sure you could track it down at their site.

Good luck!

I am thinking of taking this course, I could not find any other online organic chemistry class..

I just talked to them and they said they don't need to see my transcripts, I can just go ahead and fax them the registration form..

Other colleges usually want to make sure I have the prereqs for the course.. What about you? Was the registration pretty easy?

Oh my, I am so sorry you had to deal with this! How unfair!! Is there any way you could speak to the head or dean of the chemistry department to discuss this? There has to be some explanation (or at least you deserve to see the results of your final exam!). Thank you so much for posting this and lettting us know how it turned out...maybe when it's time I'll just cough up the extra $$ and take the UNE course.... I hope you can get some answers and have a better experience the second time around! Where will you retake the course?

After my online course nightmare, I have decided to take an organic chem course at my local community college (and just bite the bullet and sign myself up for straight nights during that time period)...I hope that taking the UNE course works out well for the rest of you; if I had to do it all over I would have taken that one instead!

May I suggest checking into your local community colleges. Tri c, here in Cleveland, offers General Chemistry 1 & 2 and Organic Chemistry 1 & 2 online. I've not heard anything bad about them, and the cost is a 1/4 to 1/3 the cost of the local universities. Just a thought.

The challenge with many of the local community colleges is being able to find time for lecture/lab while working..that's the draw for me to take an online self paced course, then I could do it on my own time and not have to worry about racing from work to class, etc.

But great idea, maybe it will work for some other people:)

The online classes @ my comm. college are accessable 24/7. You just have to go to campus a few times for classes and lab.

jls189,

What did you think of the online organic chemistry course at tri-c? I am interested in chem 2300 and chem 2310. How did you do labs? I am out of state and wondering if this is a viable option for me. Any information you can give would be greatly appreciated.
