Online Nurse Educator Programs???

Published

Hello. I have finally overcome my nerves and joined this site. Over the last few years I have often read the questions and comments, but have been intimidated to join and oh-my gosh actually post something! Well here goes, I have been an OB nurse for over 6 years and am researching MSN on-line programs for nurse educators. I am a little overwhelmed by all the on-line programs available and am curious about any recommendations for some with good reputations and affordable that someone has actually tried. All and any suggestions are welcome. Thanks, OBRN24/7

Fort Hays State University offers an all-online MSN with education or adminstration track. They are releatively inexpensive when compared to other schools and the program is very good. I have completed all of the coursework and just trying to get through the thesis!

I'm looking into both Walden and Graceland University (http://www.graceland.edu)

I do have some bias in regard to online nursing education at the baccalaureate and graduate levels of education. I can say that Walden University has offered me the best education I have ever received. I am currently seeking my doctoral degree in Education from this university. I cannot comment on their new MSN program, but I do know one faculty member and I cannot say enough good about her. I also plan to seek employment through this university in the very near future.

What I have learned is that this university has the most qualified faculty group I have ever encountered and even though I did take the Nurse Educator track in my MSN, I am the weakest student in research doctoral courses. I personally think this is due to the few nurse scientists and the inability of nurse educators to inspire students to conduct and evaluate research. I find it disheartening to see how few research articles are written by nurse clinicians and scientists. Therefore, I am now compelled to make that significant difference in our profession.

If anyone has any private questions about the doctoral program at Walden, don't hesitate to contact me. I did investigate U of Phoenix and found it to be adequate as well, but not my first choice.

Barb, I am very interested in pursuing my PhD in nursing education. Does Walden offer a PhD, specifically, in nursing education (or a DNS)? Is it totally online or does it require some "on campus" days during the year? Does it allow one to pursue part-time? If so, what is the time limit? Lastly, is it very pricey?

BTW, great to see you back posting on the boards! Have missed your wisdom and expertise :)

VickyRN, I received their catalog when I requested information and while they have several online PhD programs, none are in nursing. Doesn't mean that they won't expand and offer that in the future. They are growing all the time apparently.

Hi Vicki,

I just sent you a private message updating you on my life as a Director and Nurse Educator. I have missed you and the educator posts here, but couldn't seem to make the time to have some fun. I am going to ask if this would be appropriate: can I obtain all of your answers from the questions directly from Admissions and copy and paste them here? I will not respond to them until you inform me of the correct procedure.

The PhD that I am working on is in Education and that is what I know most about...even though you have changed to BSN education, I can tell you that I was offered a scholarship and a large discount for having been fighting in the trenches of Community College Leadership It is well-known that there is a severe shortage of these leaders in our nation.

The ironic aspect of this all is that I recall several years ago that you were in ADN education and I was at the BSN level, now we have switched. I can tell you that there are many conflicts with my personal and professional philosophies and ADN curriculum and competencies. What I have learned while in the role of educator and directing two campuses, is that in this area of the country, BSN education is not valued nor encouraged. Therefore, an ADN educator would need to teach at a different level so that Management and Leadership are taught. This course is short, but relevant since these ADN graduates are serving in middle level and upper level nursing leadership positions in this community. Amazing how our lives have paralleled.

God bless,

Barbara

Barb, it is amazing the similar paths our lives have taken. In terms of Waldon, please just post a link. Other posters will also be interested in this information, I am sure. Thanks! :) Congratulations, also, on receiving your scholarship! Well-deserved, I am sure.

Hi Vicky,

I suspected that is what you would want me to do and I am not recruiting for the college. You know how it is when you find a great thing in life and merely want to share it? That is this situation. Let me know if you have any further questions and yes, they have the PhD and the Education Doctorate as well.

To those who want to know about University of Phoenix: I did the BSN and MSN with them and it has been well-received. I then went on to do a post-MSN certificate in adult health CNS and have not had any issues with jobs.

Hi TraumaRS,

I am so glad to hear this as I had some friends who graduated from there and they don't seem to be having any issues getting positions. She received her MSN there through the educator track and another is working on her thesis and another is looking into the BSN. One factor that I really enjoyed about your university is that they have hired some very prominent nurse leaders for their faculty.

There is a beauty to online education for both the student and the nurse educator. Trauma, do you teach online?

Thank you,

Barbara

I am a new grad and have been looking for some focused opportunities to improve my education skills. Leadership programs don't seem to cut it in terms of the essential skills required to become an educator of nurses.

I have found one program that offers highly focused medical education degrees that seems appropriate for nurses and allied professionals. In fact, one program that is a Master Teaching Certificate appears to be quite reasonable in price and only takes 8 weeks. Have a look at the website and compare: http://www.internationalgme.org

Not only is it reasonable, it looks like fun!! The face to face part is in Italy!!!
