Hi,
I need to finish two more prerequisites for nursing school (human growth & development and micro with lab). I have signed up for the online micro course with virtual lab offered through Johns Hopkins and the nursing school I have applied to approves it; however, I am wondering if anyone here has taken an online course through JHU (particularly with lab) and if your experience was a positive one? I have no prior micro background other than bio 1. Thanks!

I would advise against doing an online lab course, ESPECIALLY for microbiology. The lab is what makes micro so fun, plus you learn so much.
Thank you for your advice. It works better with my work schedule this semester to take an online course and JHU's website makes the virtual lab sound pretty interactive--it is through a site called Late Nite Labs, which sounds pretty cool! I will also be taking human growth & development online. I'm eager to be finished with my prereqs already!

Have you seen the cost of their tuition???
Lol, yes I have. It's pretty steep but I had also looked at University of New England's micro with lab, which was about the same price.
I have to ask. :) So if you aren't taking this at your home university why not go to a community college and save a few bucks? I did all my pre-reqs at CC.
I have taken all of my other prerequisites at CC and had a very good experience so would love to finish up there; unfortunately I just moved out of state so even CC costs at least $600 per credit for out of state students :/ JHU is $350 per credit for everyone. It stinks because I would much rather save money while I can!

I just finished pre reqs in anatomy, nutrition and human growth & development at Hopkins online - they were challenging but I learnt a lot.
I'd highly recommend them to pre nursing candidates.
In fact I'm taking physiology, biostatistics and microbiology with Hopkins online also starting august end.
Best of luck all!
That's encouraging to hear, hopeful! If you don't mind me asking, how were your grades in the courses, particularly anatomy? The only thing that worries me about taking micro is that there are only 2 exams! Although maybe the weekly quizzes will give an idea of how the professor tests and having fewer exams won't be such a big deal. Are you just assigned readings and assignments or do the profs provide recorded lectures or PowerPoints? Thanks!
There are weekly lectures, handouts, assignments, quizzes and exams vary for each course.
I just finished the courses yesterday so waiting for my official results but I'm fairly certain I scored three As - I did work hard and put a lot of time into the work and revising, it wasn't easy by any means.
Good luck!
Thanks so much, hopeful! I'm a diligent worker and have gotten all A's in my other sciences, but was just nervous with the Hopkins name, thinking it might be extra hard to score high grades. I am definitely willing to put in the time studying as long as I am confident there is a chance I will succeed by doing so!! Thanks for sharing your experience! Good luck with your next semester!

Kuriin, right on! I would never encourage anyone to take an online lab. It does takes the fun out of it. I did micro biology last semester (spring '15) and it was super fun! Got an A+ for lab and starting nursing school this fall.
