Online Microbiology through Johns Hopkins

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi,

I need to finish two more prerequisites for nursing school (human growth & development and micro with lab). I have signed up for the online micro course with virtual lab offered through Johns Hopkins and the nursing school I have applied to approves it; however, I am wondering if anyone here has taken an online course through JHU (particularly with lab) and if your experience was a positive one? I have no prior micro background other than bio 1. Thanks!

Hi Lila,

The JH prerequisites don't have prerequisites of their own, which means that they are designed for someone who has a limited science background. I actually have an M.A in Psychology but have not taken a hard science in 30 years and I'm able to do the class. It requires work and commitment. On-line is definitely not easier than in person, it's just different.

If you are committed to doing the work and you take the time to study you should be fine.

Finn's mom, Thank you!

Hi Finn's mom! Thanks so much for your input on JH courses. I realize your post is a few months old, but I'm hoping you can help me with answers to some of my questions about JH online prereqs.

I'm starting the Chemistry course (Fall 2018) and considering taking Microbiology at the same time. Is this a crazy idea in your experience? The JH Welcome packet says plan 10-15 hours a week per lab course, would you say this is accurate? How are you finding the courses, work load, time requirements etc? Do you think Chem and Micro at once is doable with work?

The price tag is high, but it seems like the courses may be more interesting and work better schedule time-wise than the community colleges.
