One Born Every Minute (nurses seem to sit around a lot)

Published

Has anyone seen this show? It's new on the Lifetime channel. It's okay but what I don't like about it is it shows the nurses sitting around quite a bit. I understand that all fetal monitors can be viewed from the desk area in Labor and Delivery but from an onlookers prospective it just seems like they're not working.

No, you do NOT want to work on this L&D. Overworked and understaffed as is most. Believe me, I know that night shift can be just as busy if not busier. What I meant was, you don't have all the docs, students, families, etc coming in and out all the time. On our unit, we start our inductions at 11pm, 4am so they generally deliver on day shift. I've worked L&D for 15 years at 3 different hospitals and I wasn't implying at all that night shift is slow. Just not as many people to deal with.

Okay, I see what you mean. Less ancillary people is why I prefer nights anyway!

We do our inductions at 0730 and 1930, so it's kind of a tossup as to when they will deliver. Of course, nightshift doesn't deliver scheduled sections unless they come in laboring before their scheduled date, but we do our fair share of crashes and the like.

Back to the regularly scheduled thread. :)

I had the opportunity to do my clinicals at Riverside while it was filming....and as many of you nurses know....when it comes to babies it is feast or famine! And babies take time! They are cramming a long period of time into about 20 minutes worth for each patient. Riverside has a very busy L&D!! It was real!!

You are Allnurses claim to fame!! Very cool that you did clinicals at Riverside. One question.. did you have to wear those greeny green scrubs...they're enough to make a baby cry upon delivery;)

I've heard of this show and would like to take a peek at it...seems interesting. Someone posted about Boston Med...it was GREAT! I can't believe they just teased us with it!

I've been watching it. My husband mocks me that apparently I don't get enough work when I'm at work. What bothers me about it is that they do choose to only air the scenes at the nurse station when they're sitting around chitchatting and they only show the truly inane conversations (which we all have but that's not ALL we have). It's gotta be interesting for TV though.

I am really enjoying it. It's like working AND I can sit through it all. Remember that a show such as this must have hundreds of hours of tape and that the editing is massive.

Honestly, maybe you should time the "sitting" scenes. Probably only seconds. And some of the people "sitting" might be unit clerks, surgical techs, a doc or two, social workers, pharmacy personnel, etc. I find it quite realistic, but the patients and most of the family member appear to be far higher on the educational ladder than where I work.

Same here. I'm sure they carefully pick and choose the laboring patients they highlight. Where's the low income, drug using, foul mouthed patients that we see on a daily basis?

I don't think they really sit around all that much. But I can see where people may think that's all they do. Maybe they just want people to see how much the nurses love their jobs and don't get frazzled. Just like someone else stated, they are taping 24/7 so they have to do a lot of editing. I really like the way the nurses are trying to get to know their patients. It makes for a much more relaxed environment.

I just tuned into this show last night, so I got the reruns. I thought it was pretty realistic in terms of what happens in a L&D unit. The bad thing about it is, unless you're in nursing you can see the nurses being portrayed as "just sitting" around. Then it gets more ppl saying "oh, I can do that! I should be a nurse!" lol!

Anyways, if this hospital is one of the busiest of the country it should have more of the populations as well. I think it may have to do with who allows to be filmed for the TV show. Alot of ppl don't want to have that moment on national TV. I know I wouldn't!
