One Born Every Minute (nurses seem to sit around a lot)

Published

Has anyone seen this show? It's new on the Lifetime channel. It's okay but what I don't like about it is it shows the nurses sitting around quite a bit. I understand that all fetal monitors can be viewed from the desk area in Labor and Delivery but from an onlookers prospective it just seems like they're not working.

It's a TV show....when have medically related TV shows EVER been realistic??

Have seen the commercials but not the show.

If it is like any of the other shows with nurses (real life or not), I am sure we will be disappointed. They are created to entertain. Apparently, we are not entertainment material unless we are incorporated into the show as brainless handmaidens in the background.

Boston Med was the only show that I have seen that came even remotely close to portraying nurses accurately.

friend who is a cop hates all cop shows too. Have to remember they are telling a story, not doing a documentary. I do not watch medical shows for this reason

I have seen the commercials for this show and I cant figure out is it suppose to be real? like documentary of real life events or is it suppose to be more of a comedy like scrubs?

I have worked on L&D unit and the nurses did sit around a lot (and for some reason the nurses were crabby anyway!). If a pt isn't in active labor, there is no reason to be in the room constantly if the mom and baby are not having problems.

From what I understand about this show, it was taped in a hospital that delivers over 6,500 babies a year. I can't possibly fathom how they can sit around alot unless they have an absurd number of nurses on staff. Remember that this show rolls 12-24 hours of laboring patients into one hour. If the cameras just panned to an empty nurse's station, it wouldn't be very interesting would it? Of course, they have to clown around for the cameras, too. I noticed that it is filmed on night shift as well which is generally a quieter time on L&D. Also, on an L&D unit, you always need to have a number of nurses available at all times because you never know what's going to walk through those doors or what emergency may occur. I know on our unit we may have 0 patients one minute and within 20 minutes have no beds and are calling people in. We relish those few moments that we can relax a little!

I had the opportunity to do my clinicals at Riverside while it was filming....and as many of you nurses know....when it comes to babies it is feast or famine! And babies take time! They are cramming a long period of time into about 20 minutes worth for each patient. Riverside has a very busy L&D!! It was real!!

It could be worse! I made the mistake of watching "Off the Map," and that poor show jumped the shark in it's first episode. What sells isn't usually realistic; I find it dubious that most attorneys are much like Ally McBeal :)

Thanks for clearing things for me, cause once upon a time I thought it was all a act, for entertainment. But now I know. And yes, I do know that babies take time and there no need for nurses to sit in patients room waiting for baby to come.

Did you watch the last episode on thursday with with the grandma making all those slurs in the delivery room? I thought she was so funny!!!!!!!

Where is this unit?? I want to work on it! :) It never seems to be quieter in our L&D/PP at night, at least not in terms of deliveries.

I haven't watched this show and don't plan to, for the same reason I don't watch any other medical/hospital/birth shows. Not realistic, and problems get solved in 47 minutes. It's bad enough with family members who hear what they want when they have medical problems and need to go to the doctor. I don't need it on TV too!

Moving to Ob/Gyn forum :)
