Oncology, Post-op, or Renal/Endocrine

Nursing Students General Students

Hi all,

I am a nursing student and just starting my Med-Surg I rotation. I was given the opportunity to choose which floor I would like to be on. My options are oncology, post-op, or renal/endocrine (which my instructor said is a typical med-surg floor). I feel very lucky that I am being given the chance to choose which floor I would like, but my problem is my interest is in maternity and pediatrics. In addition, I will be on this floor for Med-Surg 2 next semester and possibly even my final semester, so I want to make sure I pick an area that I can enjoy and get a great experience from. I would really appreciate some insight into what these 3 areas are like, which I would get the best experience from, and what skills I will be able to use/improve upon in these fields.

Side note: My mind is not made up, but I have been leaning toward oncology. My concern is that I am not mentally prepared or emotionally ready for this kind of floor. Any advice?

Thank you!

Oh. Good options. For me I would choose post op or oncology. But that's just what I'm interested in.
