Wondering if/how nurses are reimbursed for on-call. Our agency serves approximately 160 individuals in scattered site CILAs & 4 bed ICFs. The RNs on-call rotation consists of 120 hrs/month, in addition to our regular 40+ hours/week. We are also on-call 2 holidays/year. The RNs are salaried with no payment for overtime or on-call. Call primarily involves phone-triage and answering medication questions. We occasionally need to travel to a site for medication changes. When an LPN is on-call an RN must still be available for consultation. LPNs are reimbursed per phone call. They recieve 15 min pay or comp time for each phone call. LPNs also carry the pager for 120 hours/month. They do not recieve compensation for carrying the pager if there are no phone calls.

I work in a 63 bed ICF and receive one day off for every week that I am on call.... which is twice a month (I share with the HSD). The only problem is that I cannot save them. So, if I don't use it within the month, I lose it.

We get paid an extra flat rate for every on-call weekend. We also get paid if we have to go in to a facility while we are on-call, starting from the minute you leave your house. (We aren't salary, though.)

We receive 4 hours paid time off...which would be great if we could actually use it, we can't keep nurses so, time off is rare. Over the years I have spent many "off" days receiving calls on various issues. Wish we could sell the time back for some cash or get a day off during the week. We have 75 consumers (our latest term for our residents) and approx 180 staff, we try to run with 2 RNs and 1 LPN on a good day. RNs are salaried and the LPN is hourly. The LPN gets pay for actual time spent while going "out". We get a little mileage pay but with fuel prices it is not a good situation. The bulk of the calls are handled over the phone and most are silly questions from staff. The nurses work in an office / sheltered workshop for many of the service users from 830am -5pm but that is pretty flexible. Flexability is a benefit!
