on-call practices and compensation

I work in a small OB unit (approx 450 del/yr). We do not have mandatory on call. But we do post an on call list when the schedule is put out so that shifts are (hopefully) covered by an on call nurse. We get $2 per hour for on call time, time and a half when/if we are called in.

Also if we are slow and someone is asked to stay home we have to be on call and available, same pay for that. HTH

We have mandatory 2 12-hour shifts a month and get $2/hr if not called in, I think time and 1/2 if called in - maybe double time- can't remember.

I work in a community hospital and we are required to take call each schedule but the amount varies depending on the need. We get one hour of our base pay (day shift pay) for each 8 hours of call we take then get time and a half if called in to work. If census is low and we are off, we are put on call at the same rate.

We have it really good then, we don't have mandatory on call, we have a list that we can sign up on after the schedule comes out. While we are at home we get $6 an hour and when called in time and a half plus the $6. And we almost always get called in if we are on call. We just signed a new contract and I think they are raising the on call rate to $12 an hour.

Lets just say, that I take call quit often, the pay is good and it helps out the unit

We have to sign up for 1 12 hr call shift per schedule. We get $3.50 per hr if at home, and time and a half if called in. Weekend and Friday call is assigned on a rotating basis. If signed up for weekend or Friday call then you do not need to sign up again until the next schedule comes out.

We have on call (community hospital) you usually end up with 2-3 days per month and 2-3 weekends per year at $2 per hour with 1 1/2 times when called in which isn't too often. The call person is on from 3p-7a weekdays and 3p Friday to 7a Monday. often times someone wants call so they will "take your call" For our hospital it goes in waves nobody will get called in for weeks and then it will seem like everyday for a week the call person has to come in.....if you are called off they only have until 30 minutes after the start of the shift to call you back. The on-call person shouldn't be used to cover staff shortages they are used when the unit is about full and then more help is needed usually for the OR

We have mandatory call that varies each schedule, depending on our staffing. Last month it was 12hrs, this month it's 8. We get $0.50 for each hour on call that we are not called in, and time and a half for the hours we are called in.

I work level I & II in outlying Houston hospitals.

One had mandatory call (about 3 per 4 weeks) and used to pay $2/hr to be on call, then switched to only paying $50 bonus if you came in - nothing for sitting at home - but we got called in enough that it was about the same.

This hospital I work at now does not have mandatory call, but does the $50 call bonus if you come in (sometimes they offer $100 double bonus if they are desperate). They have gotten cheap lately, though, and do not pay the bonus if we sign up for extra shifts (on-call days) way ahead of time when we write our regular days in the next month's schedule. They only pay the bonus if we sign up within a few days of or the day of the need. CHEAP!!!

Other busier hospitals within the same system are different - they pay $50 per 4 hours of call, not 8 or 12 hrs.
