Our ICUs, PICU, NICUs, critical care and pediatric float pools, as well as services like the OR all have call lists. Most of our floors don't have call. Depending on the season the EDs sometimes have a call list (when we are short staffed but our census supports us running lean), but we haven't had to in a while.
As a referral center it is very hard to predict how many transfers we will see in a shift, and most of our staff would prefer to be at home than at work bored and underutilized.
@DextersDisciple I work Postpartum, Newborn Nursery and Women surgery. We are required to only have one on call per schedule. But there are times, like today, we are put oncall if we are over staffed.

When I worked ICU we were never assigned call. I know we had low census PTO where they’d call you like an hr before your shift if they needed you.
@DextersDisciple lol. Ik! Its very rare. Ive been at my current location almost 2 years and been put oncall for over staffing 2 times. I don't mind it. I hate the $2.00 an hour to sit around worrying if they are going to call me in or not.

Hi guys hope your day is going well.
I'd like to find out what most RN's are respectfully making while on call at home? I am in the Houston Texas area. Myself and a couple ladies have started a Practice Council where we try to improve things on our floor- both patient and nurse wise.
My next topic is to possibly get a increase for our on call days....sitting at home waiting around.
I appreciate all the feed back.
