2009 On-Call Pay Scales

Published

We've been trying to get our on-call pay increased for decades! Our rate is $2.25 per hr. We are a hospital in the midwest. How is the rest of the country stacking up?

Hi, Looking for feedback on call pay.We get $2.50 hr plus the time and half. The kicker is we are a small group so we end up taking a week at a time.So in a nutshell everyother weekend we are on house arrest. We have been trying for a while to get it raised, because the cath lab is making $5.00 hr.Any helpful suggestions?

Thanks

Neuro Specialty??? And what are you called in for? Crani? I hope not, cause this is a standard procedure for any OR nurse. Spine? I've yet to see a neuro surgeon on call that takes spine trauma..usually ortho guys...aneurism clipping? How many of these do you do to get paid $10.25??...I'm just wondering how much does your orto team gets?

Any specialty team, Neuro, Vascular, and CT get this special call pay. We cover our own call, and are on call an average of twice a week, and one weekend a month. We do Cranis, Spines (our neuro docs rotate spine call with Ortho), and pretty anything else that the doc can call an emergency (tumors, anuerysm, etc.) This is my first job, and I am slowly learning that this is not a typical hospital, it is VERY specialized, however Ortho is not considered specialty call. A general, or GYN nurse or scrub can get called into do Ortho, which I do not agree on. At my hospital neuro is solely for the neuro team. The night staff that are in house 24/7 start the crani, or get our table set up, but as soon as we get in we take over. Our call back is very high, and when you are on call for a weekend, you are pretty much guaranteed to get called in for almost 15-20 hours.

MrNurse,

You are talking about pretty amazing things here... I'm in charge of ortho call in a busy level I trauma center with 25 OR and let me tell you we only have 3 specialty calls - CV, Liver transplant and Ortho. $3 for us with 2 hours min... We are super specialized and over 45% of our staff in Certified! But the funny thing is most of our nurses are comfortable in neuro and few in ortho. Our ortho emergencies is multi-trauma with open pelvises and limb re-implantations...so I highly doubt that GYN nurse can handle something like that...If we get called in on the weekend it's usually 10-12 hours and we take 2 weekends on average....I guess it all depends on the surgeons you guys must have some crazy single nuero surgeons working away for early retirement...

dont hate the player, hate the game. I wanna get 10/hr for open heart call..... I have every other week on call, about 140-160 hrs a check. that would be some serious cash..... I just get a measly $3/hr.... lol, im good with that though....

$9 an hour for RN's, $7 an hour for techs; time and a half with a 2 hour minimum when called in. We generally take an overnight during the week and 1-2 weekend days a month. This is in semi rural town about 45 minutes from Sacramento, CA

I always reply to these on-call posts because I cannot believe how low these hospitals get away with RNs putting their life on hold to be on call overnight and on weekends. I live in the San Francisco Area, and work for a hospital. I get $30.16 per hour to be on call (50% of my regular hourly rate). If I get called in, it is time and a half for hours worked with a minimum of three hour pay guarantee. If I don't get a break, I can charge an hour penalty pay for not getting a break.

Now that's just bragging, LOL ;)

Your half pay is more than most nurses make in the rest of the country......

Level I Trauma Center (very busy)

$5/hr

Time and a half when we get called in, 2 hr minimum

I know Sandra it does seem like I was bragging, LOL, but truthfully it makes me sick how most Surgical RNs have to put their lives on hold and get paid such a low rate to be on call. How is it that we as a group allow to be treated so low? RNs, we/you have to stand up and demand more!!

Specializes in OPERATING ROOM, ICU.

Well, demanding just doesn't make a difference. We work under an "open door" policy: you can leave any time you want. (Just be sure to give your four weeks notice).

I wonder if working in California where the nurses have unionized is the reason you are fairly compensated?
