ON the brink of failing!

Published

So I'm on the verge of failing med surg 1!! I need a 84 on my 4th exam and an 84 on my final to pass with a 77!! Requirements are a 75 to pass the course I'm so scared and this is all I think about I study and study but I don't know what else to do!? Is there any success stories? I don't feel like giving up I feel like I can do this!

Do practice questions! If your Med-Surg book has a study guide book, do that! Use an NCLEX book and do questions you're studying. Meet with a classmate or 2 and go over the materials. YouTube topics you're studying that you can't seem to grasp. Best of luck!

I know many people who were in the same situation and passed and are now RN's. It's possible with a a lot of hard work. I think it's best if you go over how you study and see what you can change, check what is working for you and what is not. Me personally -- I realized flash cards didn't help me. I thought it did. Instead I bought a book called med surg for success and another book with Nclex questions for many topics. After I would read a chapter (so long those chapters), I would do the questions on the back... And also do questions on the other books for the topics that are going to be on the test. After doing so many questions, they started looking the same. I learned that you can't memorize. It's about understanding the content and once you know it you automatically will know the signs and symptoms. Doing questions helped me cause I had to learn to critically think and the questions help you do that and read the rationales. Also if you have a friend that is hard working and dedicating like you maybe you can read to each other the PowerPoints and stuff - that helps too.

Don't give up :)

I had myself my own success story. Hopefully it can inspire you. So I was in Fundamentals of Nursing 1. It was my first time being introduced to NCLEX style questions, I remember getting like 60s/70s on most tests. On my third test I got like a 64...and I started crying in front of the whole class. Embarrassing...I was so embarrassed. I felt incompetent, and stupid. I couldn't understand why I just...couldn't get it, you know? I needed like....a 90? I think to pass. In order to pass the class, I needed an 80 average. If I failed, I lost my full scholorship, and I'd have to repeat the class, and I'd be a year behind. Something in me was determined. I NEEDED to pass. So what did I do? I studied my ass off. Instead of blindlessly memorizing, I memorized AND MOST IMPORANTLY....tried to analyze and take in the information by applying it. I did all the questions in the back of the book. I used the book's study guide/practice book. I have this program called Prep U that has NCLEX style questions for each of the book's chapters, and studied it.

FInally, day of the test I prayed, I prayed, and guess what? I passed. I got a 94, and i was able to go to the next year!

You keep studying. Yes there are thousands of success stories. They study and pass. You don't feel like giving up then don't give up. Maybe change your study methods. If you are doing something and it isn't working try something else. Talk with the instructor. Talk with students who are doing well in the class for tips.

Thank you all! I will study my butt off and since I have spring break cns and immune bring it on ;)

I was in a similar situation and studied but didn't pass. That was the best thing that could have happened to me because it forced me to sit down and figure where I went wrong. The problem with skating by is it is a culmination of a lot of things. Keep trying though just realize if you don't pass, it is not the end of the world either.
