OMG...not again

I opened up my latest copy of The Director, the official publication of the National Association of Directors of Nursing LTC...flipped through...aaarrrgggh....right there on page 42 in a headline "Nursing Home Residents Able to Keep Thier Stimulus Checks". THIER????????? What have we come to??? Apparently they don't use spell check or have a proof reader. Of course, I called them and offered to proof read the next issues.

The one that irks me the most of all? "I am afraid I'll LOOSE my job." It's LOSE!!! L-O-S-E FOR THE LOVE OF PETE!!!!!!!!! You LOSE something, and something is LOOSE!!!!! I see it EVERYWHERE. I actually whimper when I see it. I am not Captain-Fantasic-Speller-Of-The-Universe, but c'mon! Please?

I work in publishing, and I doubt we've ever published a product in which we didn't find a mistake--after the books or magazines were sent to the warehouse. As in most businesses these days, concern for the bottom line has slashed staff: there are fewer copy editors, proofreaders and fact checkers to keep their trained eyes on the final product.

Even those good-old-days resources, however, only reduced errors not prevented them. I'd be pretty hard pressed to think of a field of human endeavor that could boast of being error free.

Publishing trivia: a famous error happened in an early edition of the Bible since nicknamed "The Printers' Bible." Psalm 119:161, which should read, "Princes have persecuted me..." erroneously read "Printers have persecuted me..."

Well, I guess if it's loose, you could lose it.

We can't teach our kids to spell anymore because it could hurt their feelings when we tell them they are wrong. We really can't risk damaging self-esteem like that. What we need to do is let our kids use spelling to express their creativity, that way the next generation of young people can have super cool names like La-sha (Ladasha), and Exavier. Creative Spelling. It's the new poetry. Probably be a required college course by 2020. Will it be English or Art? Not English. :icon_roll
