Olivet Nazarene or Chamberlain MSN/FNP

Nursing Students NP Students

Trust me, I have done my homework on both colleges. I have searched these forums endlessly on feedback but a lot of it is outdated. I have compared the non-for profit (olivet) and for-profit (Chamberlain) FNP options. It kind of has me worried in job outlook who is more willing to accept what education you have gone through.

So my question is has anyone gone through Olivet and feel this is a good route? For those in Chamberlain are you feeling like it was worth it? I was also thinking future wise if I were to continue my education is it true most standard colleges will not take for-profit school credits? I know I could apply for somewhere "better" so to speak but my gpa came close to everyone's cut off requirement (rough family times during BSN hurt this) and these 2 places were able to accept it. Really trying to weight also going back into more debt...JOY! Any input would be appreciated!

Have you gotten any feedback in during your research? I'm not considering Chamberlain, I don't trust for profit schools. I'm really considering Olivet because their fnp program is just 24 months. All the other schools are much longer, and even though I do have the grades to apply I would hate to spend more than two years in school just for a masters.

Specializes in ER.

I'm going to a non-for-profit private college in Michigan. It's cost is similar to Olivet but it's over 3 years.

Specializes in Oncology.

Im at Chamberlain actually, finishing the FNP program in June. None of my coworkers that attend Chamberlain have had any issues with obtaining employment after completion of the BSN or MSN programs. I work for a very large, well known, and well respected hospital in the Texas Medical Center. I already have 2 job offers on the table as well. O yea, I doubled my courses allowed and I will complete the program in right under 2 years.

Hey Vastib! I ended up choosing Olivet, the non for profit did interest me and the fact I looked up real NP who graduated from there and are working today. I know Chamberlain is new in terms of their FNP. However I only know of those few who have now passed their boards. It is 24months but most schools are like that unless you check out Vanderbilt?

I don't doubt that Chamberlain is not a respected school. I have a few friends enrolled in the BSN program. I guess it's just a personal preference to not choose for profit schools. I looked at Resurrection university too since its non profit but their program is almost 3 years, too long for my preference. I am strongly leaning toward Olivet as well but not until their August or October 2016 terms. ERLaw14 let me know how the program goes once you start! It would be great to hear an updated review of their FNP program. :)

Hi @ERLaw14, have you started the program at Olivet? How are you liking it? I've applied, but haven't gotten word if I'm admitted. I plan on starting on February 2016 if they'll accept me. How much study time are you alloting per week since the classes are just 6 weeks long? I have a full-time job, and I am worried that I may not be able to complete the class requirements and still have some kind of work-life balance.

Hey! Actually I don't start until the end of October so I have a full time job as well and work parttime elsewhere. I know I am at an overkill on it! I will let you know when I start it!!! I am more nervous over finding preceptors!

Thanks for the response. I will be starting on Feb 22, 2016. I am in a statistics class right now, which I cannot drop now. I hope we can keep in contact. I would like to know more about what the classes are like. I am worried about the classrs just being 6 weeks in length. I think it would be very busy. I just haven't talked to anyone in the actual program yet who is in the know. í ½í¸€ I need to feel relieved of this nagging anxiety.

Oh, and how are you finding your preceptors? Did they give you tips? Is there any assistance from the department of nursing?

Of course we can keep in contact! You can message me your email if you like!! And preceptors I am worried about finding this. I found a facebook group that is for SNP that are finding preceptors. They give options and some help other then that I am resorting to walk in clinics and well my own PCP just left so she is out of the question. Just have to start early and dig out there. I just received my syllabus for theories class and boy it is a lot of writing and discussions boards for 6weeks. I am now nervous!!!

Thanks for responding.

I'll send you my email address when I reach my 15 minimum posts. I'm a newbie here at Allnurses. I'm mostly a lurker.

I joined the local NP association here in our area. Part of the membership was a preceptor list. I know a few people from that list. I may contact them. The trick is making sure that I don't move while I am in the program. My husband and I were thinking of moving, but I may have to convince him to delay the move for two years until I graduate.

Would it be okay if I asked you to send me a copy of the theories syllabus, too? It may not be the same as the class for Feb 2016, but I want to know what I'm getting into.

Thanks!
