Older student starting Fall 07 w/ "Gen Ed" classes

Published

Hey all, I am getting nervous.... in less than a month I will be going back to school at the age of 35 to begin my journey into nursing. I will be going to my local community college and will be going for the ADN program.

My fall semester classes...

Mat101- begining algebra

Eng101- writing comp. 1

Bio112- Intro to anatomy & physiology

Anyone else out there starting out below the normal prereq's? Would love to find someone to go through this with. Melissa

WOW - I can't believe all the responses from this thread. I'm loving it! It makes it so much easier to know I'm not alone, and yes I do think it would be a wonderful idea to have a support thread for us "Non-Traditional" students... sorry if I offended anyone by saying "older". I begin my classes on Aug. 21 - I'm getting very anxious and excited at the same time. Because it has been awhile since I have been in school, I have forgotten so much and I just don't want to look like a fool in front of the younger students. I would love to keep in contact with you all, feel free to PM or email me anytime... maybe we can get that support thread started. Thanks again everyone, Melissa

I feel the same way you do. :uhoh3: When I did my matriculation Test, everyone looked so young. I met a really nice girl who was only 18. She was going to be an RN too. really sweet!! when I get through my first class with a good grade I will feel so much better. it has been years sense I was in any kind of school. I did not do well in high school. I have heard from so many people that they did not do well in high school and are now straight A studants. I am taking one step at a time. praying every step of the way. with the support from this website I know I will do great!!

I agree! I am 31 and just working on my pre-req's. With the 18 month waiting period to get into our nursing school, I figure I will graduate May 2012!!! My son will be 12 years old!

I am nervous and excited at the same time. I question myself nearly daily. Can I handle 2 or 3 classes per semester? I read about those who are taking 15 credits per semester while working full time and I shake my head. How do they do it? I am signed up for 10 credits and I don't know if I can handle it.... Will I have enough time to keep up with 4 kids, my house and school?

I am glad that I found this site so I can vent and not feel so alone.

Thanks!

Chantel

I too am an older student, 47.

I work full time and will be taking A&PI this month. I work full time and am giving myself 2 years (including summers) to complete the non RN courses before I even apply for the nursing program. I had one year of college in 1979 so alegebraI, Soc, Psych, and Speech x-ferred.

I'm nervous that I'll be the oldest student and make an idiot out of myself. I shouldn't worry but I do. I'm trying to stay focused though.:uhoh21:

That is why I am glad we have this thread! We all feel a little less alienated. If you look uo the allexperts.com and search the nursing section, you will find a lot of people like us. Several started school in their 40's. You are never too old to fulfill your dreams!:coollook:

Hi Melissa, I know you posted this like 2 weeks ago. I'm in the same boat girl. 32 y.o. college drop out. I rushed into college after high school and basically failed or didn't show up due to partying too much :o. I begin my pre-req's this Fall too and I'm freaking out!!! I'll be taking Bio I, Nutrition, and Psch. I failed Bio twice when I was a kid, so I'm real nervous about that. Also, I'll be working full time during my pre's. I have 7 to complete. I wish you much luck Kelly

I am throwing my hat in here as well. I am 41 and starting pre-reqs in 2 weeks. I'm working on my CNA class right now (which is also a pre-req) but will be taking A&P, Chem, Eng and an Art History class (I almost have my A-H degree so I will graduate with both).

Nice to know I'm not alone!

Hi Melissa....I'm 38 w/a husband & 2 teenage daughters. I'm in my 3rd semester of pre-req's taking pre-college writing, medical term. and math. I did not prepare myself as I should have in highschool, and now I regret it. I'm so excited about it but also impatient....I wish it didn't take so long!! Good luck to you:nuke:

Oh my. You have no idea how happy I was to read this thread! :) I am a 47 year-old mother of 5, including two little ones, aged 5 & 3. I have just finished my summer semester in a general education/pre-nursing program (with a 4.0 GPA no less!) and will be starting my fall semester in less than a week. I'm lucky that many of my courses from a previous degree transferred over so my goal is to finish all of my pre-nursing courses by summer of next year. After that I hope to enter into an associate's program full-time. My long-term goal is to attain a BSN.

I have wanted to be a nurse ever since I can remember but something has always come up to prevent me from pursuing my dream. I am so excited to finally have all my ducks in a straight enough row. ;) I am also very lucky to have a wonderful family including my amazing husband who supports me 100%. I was so afraid of starting this late in my life and when I mentioned to him that, "I'll be over 50 when I graduate!!", his first response was, "So, you'll be 50 anyway!" I had no responses to that. lol

It takes a lot of guts to do what we are doing, more so I think than those who are younger. We should be proud of ourselves. Good luck to you all!

I am in the same boat as you, I am a 31 year old mother of two boys 5 and 3. I will finally start my pre-reques this fall and I cannot wait to start!!! I just wish it didn't take so long. Right now i am about half-way to graduating with my Assoicates of Health Administration degree, I graduate in Dec. 2008!!! But while I am in school, it's all online, I will also be attending my local community college and I will be taking my pre-reques, I have at least 8 classes right now to complete before I can start the RN program at my CC and i cannot wait!!! I am so excited , I have wanted to be an RN for such a long time and things just kept coming up and I kept putting it off but now with the support of my wonderful husband and kids I am finally ready to get started!!!:nurse::nurse:Nurses Rock!!!

I know extacly what you mean, I am 31 and I am starting from the beginning as well!!! I talk to a counselor at my local CC and I have at least 8 pre-reques to complete before I can start the RN program there, i am attending an online school right now and I hope that I can transfer some of credits from my online school to my CC and hopefully cut down some of the classes!!! But if not I will take what ever classes I have too so that I can enroll in the RN program.:nurse::nurse:Nurses Rock!!!
