I'm 52yo. LPN. 18 yrs in pedies, 2 yrs in ER. 5 yrs off due to re-marriage, re-locating, (etc , aka re-finding myself). --husb thought I would be ok w/ not working. I terribly miss the ER, and where I am now, I need my RN to work anywhere in the hospital. so...how old is too old to go for my RN? wondering about retirement age for nurses and simply would appreciate any advice.

im 31 yrs old...LPN..in school to get RN...work on busy medsurge floor, primary nursing. i hang blood, start IV's, hang abx, draw blood, basically everything except drawin from a central line or lifeport, iv pushes, and i must have an RN sign my care plans, and admission assesments. i look like i am 18 and get questioned at least once a day. in the beginning i had to announce my age nonchalantly and i swear that md's then took me more seriously. as for patients, when they ask how old i am, i tell them that i just turned 16 and that i graduated school early...usually they get my joke and relax...or i will smile and just tell the how old i am...building trust and making patient comfortable with you and how u care for them is what matters! and speaking with confidence! =) oh and i have a periced nose and tattoos (they arent visible but once in a while u might see just one or 2!), dress in a regular shirt, solid colors and scrub pants. i dont think that how u look matters, just be neat. your attitude and attentivness to patient will influence how they percieve you. =)

I have a new hero, I met her on travel assignment in FL, she was about 65+ and still working 12 hr nights. I really don't know age for sure, but I said , how long have you been a nurse? She said longer than you are old. I said no sir.. She said "I've been a working nurse for 52 years".. so go for it girlfriend...:)

Go for it! I know of a 72 year old OB nurse who was an LPN and returned to school in her 50's for the RN. I also know of a 78 year old still working contingency.

Your never to old. I just graduated in May and the ages in my class ranged from 20-60. Most were in the medical field and continuing on now that there children are in school full time or graduating. Your are never to old to complete your dreams.

I worked in a hospital with two LPNs in their 50s who were going back to get their RNs. (had been LPNs 20+ years), and went to school for LPN with 2 people in their 50s who were just entering nursing, so I say you're not too old! Go for it. Tonya
