I noticed alot of you have 4.0's. Do you have kids? I just dont understand how you do it. Are you up all night studying or just genuises???
I do ok I have a 3.4 but come on, BSN programs want a 4.0- the competition is stiff. Of course minimum prereq GPA may be 3.0 but thats not whose admitted. The school Im applying to gets 350 apps for 50 seats and is on a GPA ranking selection. So they automatically admit all 4.0's. I still have Stats, Micro, and Chem to take- so I want to know how are you guys getting A's???
This stuff is hard, and with small children and a household to run on top of that is even harder. I need some insight here.

After 50 years I truly think the Hokey Pokey IS what it is all about! :chuckle
I look at all the panic about a 4.0 and sigh.
I've been through two bachelor programs and a graduate program.
I haven't seen a nursing school yet that will turn away a 3.5, ACTs of 21, and a single mom raising TWO or THREE kids.
A lot of nurses teaching, and deans for that matter KNOW what guts it takes to do all that AND remain sane (or insane :chuckle) enough to complete nursing school! :chuckle
GRADES mean some but not ALL! Community service is a big one for admissions committees, creativity is big, being a MOM is big - because nursing is ALOT like being a MOM!
Actually it totally depends on the school. At the school I was accepted to the only thing that mattered was your GPA ( grades in A+P I/ II, Psych 101, and Engl 101 held more weight than the other pre-req's) and your TEAS score. The committee had * no * idea I am a single mom, or how many kids I have, or what ( if any) service I have done- that wasn't even a consideration.
I don't think that having a 4.0 is too much of a good thing- or even pathologic - again it's all circumstances. Some people have 4.0's but only took 1- 2 classes at a time, others took 4-5 classes, etc. Some have jobs, some don't. Some have to study like 90928929829 hours..others dont. There's way too many circumstances to consider.

I agree with this. I think the classes and work load is what matters and ultimately your GPA. If you are taking only Chemistry and English and getting a 4.0, I don't see that as overly impressive over someone who's taking Chemistry,English,A&P,and Psychology and getting a 3.8. I just feels it depends on each situation on how you view to weight of a 4.0.
I dont know what schools you guys are talking about but mine DOES take all the 4.0s first. They accept only by GPA and that goes from 4.0 down to 3.7. Not much room for error...
To top that off 2 of the schools Im applying to only let you repeat 2 classes TOTAL.
So back when B's were good LOL, I was getting B's. Now I need to go back and repeat some classes and I cant becuase Ive already done my 2 repeats so my gPA is what it will be forever....unless I move away to a school that doesnt have these rules. I am in CA where its extremely competitive. and I have literally popped a vessel in my forehead from the stress this has caused me.
I feel like everyone else has the option of pulling up their GPA but me. Im stuck......which is sad becuase I have these B's from before I was a serious student that are hurting me bad.......when I know I am an A student now.
I called Uniiversity of Nevada Reno the other day with some questions and they were like 'we dont care how many times you repeat classes!' and that was like the best news I'd heard in months........I was so happy, my dreams werent OVER........
Now I'd just have to uproot to Nevada, I guess thats a option.
Did I mention Im stressed!

Jerico, I know you meant well, and I know that many schools would rather have blood, sweat and tears into a 3.5, than an ace-it-all-at-once 4.0.
However, it does depend on the school's requirements.
DallasCCCD's El Centro/North Lake program goes by GPA only. Yes, you have to have at least 50 on the reading and math portion of the NET, but that's only 'just to be able to apply'.
For Spring '06, there were 115 students to apply with 4.0's, 15 to apply with 3.77 that had all of their support courses completed.
Only 100 students were accepted. That meant that 100 4.0 students were accepted, 15 4.0 students weren't accepted, and the 3.77 and below also were not accepted.
That is why I am taking a chance of loosing my B in Algebra by retaking it. I'm taking that chance because I know there will be those 4.0 students that didn't get accepted, plus any new 4.0 students. There is also the chance that the 3.77 students that had all of their support courses will retake their 1 "B" class and also end up with a 4.0. (Hopefully, myself included.)
So, if there ends up being 100 new 4.0 students, plus the 15 4.0 students that were denied, plus any of the previous 3.77/all supports that ends up with a 4.0, there will be a H*)) of a lot of 4.0 students to apply for Fall '06!
That's why I'm obsessing to obtain a 4.0. Otherwise, I would try my best, and still be able to have a life.
OK, I think I've rambled enough..back to studying for my upcoming Algebra class! lol
Good luck everyone, we'll get in when the time is right! :)
The school I hope to attend considers GPA and ACT scores only. The higher they both are, the better. The application does not ask for much in the way of personal info. Just name, address, phone #, etc. Nothing about being a single mom or working full time while going to school. So yes, my GPA will matter a great deal to me. MY ACT score is good, but if my GPA is not high enough, I won't get into nursing school. I'm still aiming for a 4.0 for that reason.
I find the whole issue that ALL had a 4.0 incredible. How do you know this? Are all these records released for all to see?
I have been accepted to three nursing schools and I don't have a 4.0....
Even getting into medical school not ALL applicants will have a 4.0. It is a known fact that there are factors other than GPA and ACT/SATs. Race being one, as a matter of fact.
Do the nursing schools have interviews? If they are ONLY going on GPA then why would they interview or ask for letters, recommendations?
Perhaps having MANY credit hours has something to do with it? I think it is MUCH harder to hold a 3.5 over 135-225 credit hours than it is to hold a 4.0 over, say 50 hours?
Im saying that at one school (Fresno State for example) They go only by GPA. No interviews, no letters, they dont care who you are....So highest GPA's get in first and the cut off last semester was 3.7 .
So yea maybe thats not all 4.0's but all the 4.0's are definitely getting in.
They dont care about anything but your grades in the pre-reqs. Which does make it pretty simple, you dont have to worry about all the other factors, but if you dont have a high GPA ya aint getting in.....

I would worry about a school that doesn't use references, interviews - SOMETHING other than GPA.

Not sure where one gets the idea a nursing school takes "all" the 4.0s first.
Isn't true.
There are other things a nursing school looks at.
ACT/SATs. If you worked AND had a 3.4 THAT is still awesome.
Each applicants package is looked at individually.
A 4.0 does not necessarily mean you will be a good nurse.
No offense to those of you with a 4.0 but I'd be more inclined to accept a student with a 3.6 - 3.7. NOT that you didn't study "blood sweat and tears" through it all....
Too much of EVEN a GOOD thing seems a bit "odd"; even a bit pathologic.
ALSO - some schools give 4.0s like water....a 4.0 from one school does not equal a 3.5 at other schools.
Nursing schools are the same: a 3.4 at one may be a 4.0 at another.
Grade inflation. That is why they DO NOT take all the "4.0"s first.
