OHSU applicants for the 2016-2017 cycle

U.S.A. Oregon

Hello everone!

I'm starting this new thread for all applicants to OHSU for this upcoming application cycle. I myself am applying as soon as Fall term is done. Everyone else who's applying feel free to post here- questions, comments, etc. A very wise piece of advice someone on this forum gave me was that it's going to be a tough and stressful application process, but much better when we can team up and get through it together:)

Hi! I have been checking to see if anyone started a thread yet for current applicants, just found this! I am planning on applying after fall term as well; created my nursingCAS account, and already feeling the stress!:nailbiting: My situation is a bit unique, as I am currently a practicing Certified Professional, and Licensed Midwife here in Oregon. My reason for going back to school for nursing, is to become a Certified Nurse-Midwife. Broaden my scope of practice, and have privilages in-hospital. I am hoping with my background, I have a good chance at getting in, but man this whole process is so competitive! I like that OHSU seems to take into account the entire applicant, instead of just GPA and "points"; but I am worried about what my actual chances are. I won't have my A&P series complete, and maybe a social science elective done by end of fall term. GPA from my previous degree is 4.0, but my transcript at my community college currently, is around 3.5, as a couple of the pre-req classes I have on there are from classes I did when I was still in highschool and got Bs... (Unless they accept A&P and electives from midwifery college, waiting to hear back.) What campus are you applying to? I am applying to Klamath Falls:).

Definitely as a midwife, having previous professional experience in a medical field you're bound to get extra points and it seems to me that it makes your application really stand out:up: Good job girl!

I don't have professional medical experience but I was an at home caregiver for my grandmother for a long time when she was sick, and I'm a volunteer with a local hospice agency. I'm hoping to volunteer at Doernbecher children's hospital after this term if I can to get more experience, ( I absolutely love working with little ones especially babies :)! That's why I want to go into the NICU.)

By the way, I didn't know you could already create the nursingCAS account now. I thought I had to wait until right after Fall term when I'm applying but I'll have to get mine started as well.

As for schools, It's much more practical for me to apply to Monmouth since I live right close by, and many have recommended it, but it's really hard to shake off the possibility of going to the Portland campus. I've thought about it, and at this point, even though it's a gamble, I think I'm going to apply to the Portland. My other two "backup" schools will be PCC and University of Portland. How about you, is OHSU the only one you're applying to?

Yep! OHSU opened up their applications a couple weeks ago! NursingCAS saves everything as you go, and you can edit/add/delete things up until you submit it. Its nice to preview the short essay questions, and start entering my transcripts. It takes a couple days, as you have to individually enter every single class you have ever taken at any college. Then, you designate which ones will be what you want to count for your pre-requisites, and can take a look at if you have everything you need in order. I will also be applying to COCC here in Bend, but am really hoping to get into OHSU! I would have to relocate with my two small children, but in the end it would be worth it, because of how their program works, overall it will reduce my time in school by 2 years!

I did some of my prereqs in Bend at COCC, great school and amazing teachers!!!!

Just wondering, what prereqs did you already take to become a midwife?

All of them, and the general ed required for my associates of arts degree in midwifery, but since they were mostly done through my midwifery college (The National College of Midwifery) which is accredited by MEAC, I dont yet know if OHSU will accept any of them...COCC doesn't, so I have been doing all of the pre-reqs through COCC for the last year or so... If OHSU only accepts the classes I have being doing at COCC, I will not have A&P 11, or 111 done by application deadline, I also might be missing an elective- but would have all minimal requirements fulfilled, and microbiology after fall term. Do you have all your pre-reqs complete? COCC is a good school, and has a good nursing program, but unfortuantely they are not apart of OCNE, or even ACNE accredited. It would be a good option for someone who just wanted to become an RN, but my goal is a masters, so it would be the long way around for sure-still applying though, for a backup choice. Just so I know we are on the same page, you are applying to OHSU 3 year BSN OCNE program correct?

Yes, correct. It's longer of course than U of P which is only a two year program, but in the end it amounts to three years by the time I'm finished since the U of P program doesn't start ( for transfers like me) till Spring 2018 instead of Fall 2017. I don't think I'm patient enough to wait that long:no: Oh well, whatever happens happens! By the way, if you take micro at COCC take either ------------ or --------------------, they're beyond amazing professors. I had --------------- and he was hands down the best teacher I've had. Doesn't trick you on exams, all that's on the lecture notes and in lecture is exactly what's on your tests, and he's very approachable and helpful with any questions. A lot of people, especially nurses, told me micro was very hard, and one even told me she took it twice, but they also had hard instructors. He presents the material to you in way that's easy to understand and retain. I loved it!!!!

All my important prereqs like the A &P series, micro, stats, cells and genes bio, psych etc.. will all be done by end of Fall term, so in Winter I'll be finishing up with art, music, PE, second term of ASL ( all these for my AAOT) and World Religions class (for U of P just in case;)

Hi everyone! I just wanted to jump on this thread as time passes. Hoping to hear to hear about interviews in the next month or so, although it may be a bit early :)

I don't think they will send invites out until march í ½í¸• Where did you apply?

Has anyone who applied to the graduate programs heard back about an interview yet? I'm getting antsy over here!

Specializes in Perinatal.

Hi all, I'd like to jump on this thread also. I applied for both the ACBAC an the ACBAC to midwifery programs. I was also a direct-entry midwife for 6 years. I'm super antsy about hearing back from OHSU also! Good luck everyone!

I applied to the CNM Masters program and have heard nothing back yet! I was in contact with one of the admissions counselors and it sounds like they were out of office for quite a while due to the snow & ice that Portland experienced. I'm wondering if they were even able to host interviews on the 19th and 20th?? Every time my phone rings during the day I jump with excitement hoping to see the 503 area code.
