OHSU ABSN 2021

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone else is applying for the ABSN at OHSU for 2021? I just submit my application for the Ashland campus and would love to connect with other people who are applying! I'm feeling pretty nervous about how competitive the program is ?

Congrats! Can't wait to meet you! If you have FB, we have a FB group, feel free to join ?

I don't use facebook, is there anyway to connect on LinkedIn? That would be really cool!

I made a LinkedIn group. I don't know if anyone is interested. It is for the Winter 2022 Cohort for Portland. https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13961525

@sshall I was curious if you were in the "highly likely to be admitted" category of the waitlist?

For those offered admission to Portland, what is the commit-by date? I emailed admissions and they just told me "end of March"

Our deposit needs to be postmarked by March 27th

I was in the highly likely category.

Has anyone received their deposit notification email yet? (For Portland ABSN)

I mailed my check last Friday, and emailed the admissions agreement (and received a response) but still haven’t received the deposit notification.

Same here. I sent mine with tracking, so I know it was delivered but no response from them, or deduction from my bank account.

Certainly testing my patience tho!

That was smart! I didn’t use tracking - but it’s reassuring that I’m not the only one who hasn’t gotten a response yet. I’ll try not to worry all weekend haha.

Has anyone who was accepted to the Ashland campus ABSN denied their spot? I am waitlisted as "moderately likely" and trying to get a sense of the chances.

Also, for those of you accepted this year, what do you feel like made your application or interview stand out?

Does anyone have experience with the John Hopkins SON online  classes (I.e. anatomy, micro, psych, etc.)? Does OHSU recognize them to fulfill their pre-reqs?

Hi there! I don't have experience with JH but you can probably email OHSU and ask them about it. They'll be able to let you know. I asked them about my classes from out of state and they were more than happy to help. I would bet that any classes from an accredited institution would transfer. BUT contact OHSU to make sure.

Also, make sure that the cost it worth it. Community college route may be cheaper and I think many are still doing online classes if that is a concern. JH charges $350 per credit, Portland Community College, for example is $123 per credit. Most classes are between 3-5 credits depending on the school. Portland CC also has a 10 week schedule for each class like JH.

You can also look at community colleges out of state. You'll just have to pay their out of state tuition. Example, California has a ton of online classes that meet prereq requirements, but their out of state tuition is $290 per unit. Still cheaper than Johns Hopkins.

Hope that helps! Good luck!

P.S. I am an admitted student for the Winter 2022 ABSN cohort, so my prereqs through California and Oregon community colleges worked.

Hello former ABSN students! I am hoping for insight on class schedules (generally, how many classroom hours per day/per week and how many hours/days/weeks for clinical), and hybrid (or online) vs in-person class formats. I'm trying to figure out whether/how I could commute to OHSU from another city (by plane) so that my kids can stay in their current location and schools, at least for my ABSN year. My big, wild hope is that OHSU might offer the flexibility for me to take as many courses as possible online so that I commute to Portland once a week (for a few consecutive days each week) for any classes/clinical training that must be in person. Or is it all mandatory in-person classes and clinicals 5 days/week?

Additional questions:

(1) Do you know any students who commute from far away who might be willing to speak with me about their experiences? If so, I can DM you and pass along my email address.

(2) Do you know whether there is any kind of priority enrollment or other flexibility for students with young children? I'm really hoping to condense my in-person attendance to 2 or 3 days each week so that I can mostly take classes online and maximize the days each week that I can see my kids.

(3) Are in-person clinicals typically every week of each semester, or are they condensed into portions of each semester?

(4) Are there clinical intensives where students need to be present in-person 5 days/week? Are there weekend clinicals during the MDE program?

(5) Any other general thoughts about the program that you'd like to share?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
