Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Has anyone gotten financial aid for the RN-BSN program through OU?

If so, when in comparison to applying and filling out your FAFSA did you get your award letter?

I applied and had everything in May, including my FAFSA.

I got my acceptance into the first fall start date 2 days ago...yes 2 days ago.

I'm just wondering when/if I should expect an award letter or any financial aid.

My work offers tuition reimbursement, but I obviously need a way to pay for it now.

Thanks in advance

They are late with financial aid this year for some reason. Summer session financial aid was just disbursed yesterday. I think fall financial aid is set to disburse end of August.

Hey Chuckster

How are things going with Transitions? And, what are you taking for your next class?

rninme: I was remiss in my reply about the ENA to not have included a "thank you".

As far as Transitions, things are going well enough. Due to some careless mistakes, I lost a total of 3.75 pts out of a possible 80 so far which probably puts an A out of reach. No real complaints about the course though. This is my first true on-line course and it's not particularly hard but it is pretty time-consuming.

As far as next semester, I'm not sure what I'll take. Looks like Management Issues is recommended as the successor course for Transitions but I haven't even checked yet to see what's offered.

Strategic Planning is the 1st fall class - I am in Management now.

I am so ready for week 5 to be over, so I can get a needed week long break. Been taking summer classes without a break since Jun 20.....

kinda ready for a week break myself :)

This question is for anybody....is it safe to get books at textbooks.com when there are actually 2 ISBN numbers listed for it??? Looking for the Transitions class in 2 weeks and want to get the right thing. Are any books used for more than one class???

I bought books for my first 2 classes. Rent everything now. Apparently you will use the book for Transitions, but I have yet to reuse it. Management and Strategic planning use the same book, so I will just extend my rental agreement.

I've NEVER purchased from the OU book store. You will find books WAY CHEAPER if you search online (especially Ebay).

I've been spending this entire weekend getting ready for ONE class! Amazon is out of this book, ebay has one to bid on that's not $60, and textbooks only has a rental available for $29.....wth? :lol2:. Appreciate this advice

Rent....It's seriously the best move I've made for these 5wk classes. How often do you go back and look at all of those old textbooks that you've purchased? I never do. And if you need the book for another class later, just rent again...

I've suggested this before but with respect to textbooks, one way to save tons of $'s is to buy the previous edition.

When a new edition is released, it essentially makes the previous edition valueless and you can find not only used but often new texts on line for next to nothing. This is not an exaggeration: I've purchased brand-new previous generation textbooks that were $150 for less than $10. Used versions can often be had for less than $1. It often costs more to ship the book (usually about $4) than the actual book price.

This strategy is not without risk and does require extra work at both ends. For example, while the new edition rarely differs significantly from its predecessor, page numbers will be different. This means that you'll have to search a bit for the section assigned in syllabus since the page references won't be the same.

Another more risky strategy is to buy the foreign edition. I'm not sure why, but the British editions of textbooks are often significantly less their US counterparts and the Indian editions are much less than the UK ones (this may be the print equivalent of the situation in pharmaceuticals). You can buy with reasonable assurance through an on line retailer like the one whose name is the same as a major So American river but shipping and tax can eat substantially into the savings.
