Ohio State Master's Entry Summer 2016

Published

Hello! Has anyone out there applied to the Entry Master's Program at Ohio State for the Summer 2016 start?

Thank you both!! I have a 3.6 cum and a 4.0 prereq without pharmacology completed, so I guess we'll just wait and see what happens. Hopefully they like my recs, statement, and experience enough!!

For anyone currently in the program, are you required to go to your clinical sites the night beforehand?

The program is extremely intense, but on the bright side, I've already learned so much. Like Toothless, I also have a graduate degree, and agree that the workload and course material is more challenging than anything I have previously done. The summer semester was much lighter than this fall has been. The combination of our Medical/Surgical clinical and Pathophysiology is tremendously time-consuming and just plain tough. It's also really interesting (for the most part). You will have to devote more time to this program than you've likely devoted to school in the past, or at least that's been my experience. I am doing well, but have very little free time outside of school and work (I am a PCA/SNA ~24 hours/week). Just fully commit and you WILL succeed.

Clinical rotations are 12 hours once a week or six hours twice a week. I am currently doing 12 hour shifts, which I prefer. We meet on the unit at 0630 and go home at 1830. I arrive no later than 0625. You don't have to be there the night before, or at least I've not experienced anything like that.

If anyone has questions, feel free to send me a message. I check the site every now and then. Good luck guys!

Thanks for sharing, astriker!! That definitely makes me feel better about the program overall!! How long have you worked as a PCA and do you feel that it has helped/is helping you in school right now? It's good to see that it is possible to work as well, albeit time-consuming. I'm hoping to be able to work a little bit somewhere as well, maybe about 16 hours a week. That's also good to know about the clinicals/night before clinicals. I have a friend who attends another school for nursing and she said before her clinicals she has to go to the hospital the night beforehand for a few hours and essentially has to write up enough material that equates to around a 13-page paper...and she had clinicals twice a week, so basically two 13-page papers a week on top of the rest of her classes and studying!

Hi all! I just recently found this thread thankfully. I applied to the PMH specialty and received my interview email a few days ago. Good luck to everyone applying. :)

Hi guys, I just got accepted into the Pediatric Primary Care for 2017! Any tips for those in the program? Do any of you have jobs in a Pediatric setting?

Congratulations!

Tips:

-stay on top of everything leading up to enrollment. Find a way to track dates and requirements

-Do the work. 1% or 0.5% of your grade doesn't seem like much, but it's there to help you.

-Accept a big/mentor. You may get books.

-Keep copies of all documentation (vaccines, class completion, payments, etc)

-June is sooner than you realize. Don't procrastinate on starting your vaccines, buying uniforms, taking the STNA class if you haven't, etc.

-Expect changes and random fees. You will be required to purchase a piece of software before fall 2017. Plan for the $1200 charge. It's due before financial aid.

-If you ever need help, ask early. As cliche as it sounds, most everyone wants you succeed. You were picked over similarly qualified candidates. Ask peers, instructors, 2nd years, anyone.

-You are stuck with your cohort for the next 3 years. Try to bond and at minimum tolerate each other. You can either go through this with friends or with animosity. It's easier together.

Hello again!

I wanted to know how many of you have been working during your masters program. I know theres not much time IN CLASS...but a lot of the work is done outside. If any of you are working, how often? And doing what? Thank you!

Hi everyone! I was just accepted to the FNP program through the distance learning program. I am wondering if anyone has experience with this? I live in California and have had a hard time finding someone to talk with about their experiences with the distance learning aspect of the program! Any information would really really be great. You can direct message me or post here. Thanks!!
