So I'm a NS and...

Oh these words, these words!! :uhoh3:

I'll just say that I know when I can say "sphygmomanometer" with out sounding out every syllable and taking 72 1/2 seconds to say it, I will have victory!!!

:lol2:

Everybody has at least one term that hangs them up. What's yours?

Specializes in Med-Surg, ICU.
oh, when i have to tell a pt that an EGD stands for "esophagastroduodenal" (if that's even right, lol) that takes a lil time to spit out, lol

Love this one. When patients ask me about it I will try to say it for them....but usually end up with "The scope that goes down your throat" :lol2: . Oh and by the way its: Esophagoduodenoscopy :coollook: (I had to check.) Relysh

Winter,

Here's an E-Z way to say:

Macrobid :clown:

Yup, thats exactly what I do! :D

Heard a fellow nursing student complain today that her "sphygnanometer" wasn't working. My first thought was "That's not the right word, you're missing a couple syllables." My second thought was "Why not just call it a BP cuff like everyone else?":p

Specializes in psychiatry,geropsych,LTC/SNF, hospice.

Endarterectomy --usually ends up being translated into "Mr. X, they rotor routed your blood vessels" :)

And there's oodles of generic med names that slow me down

Atelectasis ( probably spelled wrong too). and encephalopathy.

My childhood bff was named Alexis. I spend a good portion of my childhood at Alexis's house. In NS, I always got tripped up with atelectasis and pronounced it "at Alexis's". Lol.

Mediastinoscopy. I don't no why I have problems with this word!

Specializes in Med-Surg, ICU.

Definitely EGD! A patient laughed when us when myself and a fellow nurse were doing walking rounds. The other nurse said, "Hi! My name is ****, and I will be your nurse today! Are you all ready for your EGD?" (Cue the patient looking at us, all confused.) The lightbulb comes on after a second, and the patient says, "Oh! The scope thing into my stomach? What's that stand for again?" Me and the other nurse said together syllable by syllable "E-so-pha-go-gastro-duo-den-o-scopy!!" The patient about died laughing at us struggling to break it down for her! I think she just wanted to hear us try to pronounce it, lol! Gets me every time! :yeah:

I'm a showoff, and I love big words :)

but please, someone tell me.. how do you pronounce dilaudid (not sure I spelled it right, but pretty sure you'll know what I mean). I've never had reason to say it (not used where I'm from), but I see it on here and I've always wondered!
