U.S.A. Washington DC

Specializes in ER/Trauma.

Hello everyone,

Looking to see who else has been accepted into the October 2013 RN Residency/Bridge program with MedSTAR Washington Hospital Center. I myself am a new grad BSN, coming from 4 years of tech experience (float pool, ED) with Inova and Reston, starting with the ED, which I am very excited about. I have lived in the DC Metro region almost my entire life, but have never worked in DC, which will be a big change. For the mean time, I am still living with my parents, but hope to move to the Loudoun/Fairfax border area soon.

What unit will you be on?

Are you new grad or experienced?

Why did you apply to WHC?

Are you moving to the area or from the DMV?

Anyone in the market for roommates or in need of info on the area? I am happy to answer any questions you have about NoVa, DMV, DC, etc. I am also interested in speaking with anyone looking for a roomate - if you didn't know already, you will soon find out that the area is expensive!

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

-Jamie

I'm a new grad, no nursing/tech experience previously and I just finished an accelerated BSN program. I'll be working in the Cardiac IMC department! I applied because a friend suggested it and when I had the interview, I walked around the hospital a bit---everyone was so sweet and friendly. I went to school in Baltimore, so many of my friends live and work in DC now and I've been there quite a bit. I actually just signed a new lease with a friend in November and will be couch-surfing with others until then. I'm really excited to start!

Hello,

I will be one of the new grads entering in this October start --- very anxious and excited! I'll be working in 1C - Geriatrics. I moved out from California, and am currently living in Alexandria, VA. However, I am hoping to move into the city (preferably Columbia Heights neighborhood), soon. =)

If anyone is looking or interested in potentially looking for a room-mate situation, please let me know. I am not in any rush, but would like to start looking for new living arrangements.

I look forward to meeting everyone during Orientation!

Hi!

I got a job offer today for unit 1C. How's the floor? Please tell me about your experience.

Hello @renardeau

I just got offered a position at the IMC floor as well. Can you please tell me a little about your experience on that floor. Are you still working there. I am a new graduate and any information to help me get started will be helpful. How was your first year as an RN? Also are you looking for a roommate if youre still in the area?

Thank you so much!

Hello @renardeau

Can you please tell me a little more about your experience at the IMC floor. I got offered a position at 4c IMC.. and I am really excited. I am a new graduate nurse so any information will be really helpful. Do i need to prepare for anything beforehand ? Also are you still looking for a roommate? And are you still on the floor? Thank you!!1

You'll love the floor! It's one of the best in terms of unit culture (or so I hear from the float nurses). The Heart Failure doctors and NPs expect you to deliver, but they are great to work with and you learn a lot. I'm not in the market for a roommate right now, but I will PM you with more about the floor later!

I would love to hear back from others who have gone through the program and hear their thoughts. There are lots of threads on getting into the program but none on the program and working at WHC in general.

That sounds great!!!! I am so excited. I have one more question. I am actually out of state and am having some difficulty getting my DC license on time. I applied for it as soon as I received the offer, but I doubt I will have it before the orientation which is next week. I literally have 12 days including weekends to get my license and find a place I nDC :( Were there problems like thid during your year? What were the consequences?

You might be surprised. The turnaround time for licensure by endorsement was really pretty quick for me. (I got my offer the beginning of the month and had to start before the end of it. I only applied for licensure by endorsement after I had the offer in writing.)

As for finding a place, I'm afraid my situation is unique in that I lived in Baltimore and could afford to commute until I found a place to my liking. It didn't take long though (less than a month) as there is a high rate of turnover in a big city like DC, but I'm not sure where you're relocating from and if you can afford to wait like I did.

Ah you were very lucky then @renardeau ,

I just called DC board and they werent the most friendliest.... they just shut me down saying nope nothing can be done. even for a temporary license!! I just need to wait. ..I am a little disappointed that they could not make any exceptions given that my start date is so soon.

btw I am coming from NY and I actually came down there last thurs to submit my application at the DOH. I stayed in a hotel and had even found a place to stay. But seems like I will have to cancel it all. :(

Its so disappointing that I already had the offer, but because of other circumstances that i have no control over, i most likely won't have the job...

I still have about a year to go but I think working in the ER or LD would be awesome there. I'm hoping to apply there for a residency. Anyone know how they treat scheduling? I'm dreading rotating shifts. Day and evening no problem. It's the nights that I am so afraid of. Anyone who works at WHC for this residency have any insight?
