Hands-on skills course
Thank you for the feedback! I'm looking at a couple hospitals that offer a critical care fellowship for experienced nurses, but the job I am most interested in, and am in the interview process for, is not a fellowship (though they do accept ED nurses). As you said, I would hope the orientation would be thorough, but I am not sure what to expect. Thankfully, I have had at least some exposure to everything you mentioned over the years - but since I have mostly been in an office the past 3 years, before I go too far down the hiring process, I would like to try and get some hands on again, especially on invasive monitors and drips, as well as things like IABP, CRRT, etc. that I've learned about, but have scant experience with. In the meantime, I have been collected some of the resources commonly suggested on here, and will keep looking!

Hands-on skills course
Hello, I’m primarily an ER/trauma nurse that has been in admin for the past couple years (though still working PRN at freestandings). I’m looking into some opportunities that would be back at the bedside in more of a critical care setting. I know some of those roles will have heavy hands on orientation, but for my leading pick I’m not sure what the orientation would be like in that respect. Since I’ve not been very hands on lately, my skills have definitely dipped. Does anyone know of an in-person refresher course that focuses on/includes hands on skills/monitors/vents/etc.? I’m OK with traveling to take the course, as well as dropping some money on it. The closest I have found is perhaps a CCEMTP course. thanks!

Getting a job in the ER when you don't have experience
It all depends on the hospital. I got a job as a new grad with Medstar WHC (washington dc) in the ED. WHC routinely hires new grads no problem - in my group of 6 for this hiring phase (there's about 4 a year), 5 of us are new grads. Whereas my old community hospital (which was honestly my first choice), I wasn't able to get a job in the ED even after working there as a tech for 3 years.

How many men in your cohort?
When I started my traditional 4 year BSN program, there were three men, including me, out of 50 or so total. One dropped by second year, one dropped before senior year.

New Grad BSN salary in northern Virginia???
Unfortunately I do not know a lot about outpatient, but Inova is $25 for new grads, MedSTAR WHC in DC is $28, and Reston is around $25 as well.

Trauma Centers- East Coast
Thats about 24 patients per day, for a single highly specialized trauma unit. The ICU at my local hospital is a generalized ICU with only 12 beds, and only gets 1-3 admits a day. I 'm sure one massively critical patient per hour is more than enough! Congratulations!! How many beds is the NeuroTrauma unit? Nurse:patient ratio?

Trauma Centers- East Coast
Inova Fairfax in Falls Church, VA. MedSTAR Washington Hospital Center, in NW DC. UVA in Charlottesville, VA (not near water, sorry). Shock Trauma in Baltimore you know. Several in Boston and NY, probably one in Richmond, VA though I'm forgetting the name. And congratulations for the interview with Shock Trauma! I was able to tour the trauma bays and resuscitation area and it is an extremely impressive environment.

October 2013 Residency - Washington Hospital Center
Hello everyone, Looking to see who else has been accepted into the October 2013 RN Residency/Bridge program with MedSTAR Washington Hospital Center. I myself am a new grad BSN, coming from 4 years of tech experience (float pool, ED) with Inova and Reston, starting with the ED, which I am very excited about. I have lived in the DC Metro region almost my entire life, but have never worked in DC, which will be a big change. For the mean time, I am still living with my parents, but hope to move to the Loudoun/Fairfax border area soon. What unit will you be on? Are you new grad or experienced? Why did you apply to WHC? Are you moving to the area or from the DMV? Anyone in the market for roommates or in need of info on the area? I am happy to answer any questions you have about NoVa, DMV, DC, etc. I am also interested in speaking with anyone looking for a roomate - if you didn't know already, you will soon find out that the area is expensive! Looking forward to meeting everyone. -Jamie

Washington Hospital Center
I was offered (and accepted) a position for the upcoming residency program in the ED. I found the whole process to be very quick, cordial, and overall a good experience. Coming from a Level III suburban hospital as a tech to this type of facility will be a huge change, but I think people don't always realize exactly what they are getting into at first, hence some of the discontent. And its DC, so of course there will be politics and what not. But I would love to hear from people who work/have recently worked there, about what they thought of the hospital, good and bad.
