Obtaining a TX Drivers License

I moved to the DFW area from California 6 weeks ago, and now need to obtain a Texas drivers license. Does anyone know the step-by-step procedure?

My California drivers license has been valid for 6 years. Thanks in advance.

I am originally from Dallas, but a few years ago we moved to Oklahoma, and when we got back all we had to do was go to the DMV, take your old license with you to turn in, take the eye exam, and they take your picture and give you your paper license.

That's all.. Hope this helps.

Moving to Texas?

New residents moving into Texas, who have a valid driver license from their home state, have 30 days after entry into the state to secure a Texas driver license. To apply for a Texas driver license, applicants will be required to:

Applicants age 18 and over with a VALID out-of-state driver license

Provide proof of Identity.

Provide proof of Social Security Number.

Provide proof of Texas vehicle registration and , if you own a vehicle.

Complete required forms available at any Texas Driver License office.

Pay the required fee.

Pass a vision exam.

If you have a VALID out-of-state license in your possession, it must be surrendered at the driver license office.

NOTE: If you have never been licensed or have an EXPIRED out-of-state license, you will be required to pass both the written and driving exams, in addition to a vision test.

This came from the Texas Dept of Public Safety website. The fee is $24. As long as your CA DL isn't expired you shouldn't have to take an exam.

Just take yourself and your old license to the nearest DMW office. Pay the money and you got it. There is one in Lake Worth. Where are you at? Maybe I can find you a closer one.

I am located in South Fort Worth, south of the I-20 and west of the I-35 near South Hulen Street. I am just a short drive from the Hulen Mall.

I just went through all this not to long ago.

First I got TX car insurance.

Then I got TX license plates, registration and a new title(had to surrender it). This cost $120ish :/

Then I was able to get my TX license (which i still havent gotten yet)

Thats how I had to do mine, and its what I was told to do- I had sent out an email to the tax collector (thats where pay your fees too) and thats what they told me to do.

Good luck!

I don't have an out-of-state liscense because I don't live in the US. I plan to work there in the US(TX) anytime this year. I have a current non professional driver's liscence in my own country(Philippines). Does this mean I will have to start with zero (like written test, driving test, vision exam and everything)? Thanks 4 the help..
