]So, I posted a thread this morning about abbreviations. I got to thinking, people on here must think I am stupid. I am, when it comes to nursing. I have my current CNA license in NC. But I challenged the test and passed it, no big deal.
BUT, now I am interested in nursing. I know NOTHING about. I know NPO means "nothing by mouth" and PRN is "AS NEEDED". I feel so ]stupid! First off, I have no support from my family in my career choice. My father looks at is a "dirty" career because you deal with lots of diseases and germs. He NEVER goes to the doctor. He thinks that it's great that I want to do something but he keeps trying to convince me to change majors, I REFUSE!!!!! My mother thinks I need to skip school all together and go right into the work force, like walmart. NOTHING wrong with walmart, but I want to be a dag-blame NURSE! I am meant to be a nurse, I get this feeling when i'm in the hospitals that I get NO where else. I love it. I love being there. I love getting I'Vs. I love seeing the nurses and their scrubs, everything about it! CHESSY as it sounds, I am meant to be in a hospital!
ANYWAYS, I am sooo excited. I've been looking online at the local colleges for nursing we have around here, we are LUCKY! We have 6 in the city of Charlotte, NC and one of those in GASTONIA! I chose "Mercy school of nursing" http://www.cmc-mercy.org/body.cfm?id=108
]They seem like such a great school. I have seen their nursing students walking around the hospital before, I get so jealous. I am obsessed with nursing. I read EVERYTHING online. I am learning so much from this website, I love :redpinkheallnurses.com:redpinkhe
]About prerequisits, they require you have BIO 168, 169 AND 275. English composition. That's all. :heartbeat
_____
The local community college requires BIO168, CIS110, ENG111, BIO169, ART111, MATH161, PSY150, BIO275, COM231, ENG112
]I plan to take BIO 168 AND ENGLISH THIS SPRING 10'
I plan to take BIO 169 AND BIO 275 THIS SUMMER 10'
I plan to apply to nursing school FALL OF 2009 FOR FALL OF 2010!
Yep, I said it, I am offically going to apply TO NURSING SCHOOL because they said I could apply as long as I have those classes done by the first day of nursing school!
Is ANYONE as obsessed with nursing as me?!

I am definately 100% obsessed with nursing
It's a good thing! Use it to your advantage...nursing school is tough and it will test you, if you don't have dedication you probobly won't make it.

LOL! Please keep that drive, strong will, and determination as you will most definately need it going through the program. I admire you so much for pressing ahead inspite of your lack of support; you are a determined and goal oriented individual. As the administrator of my nursing school stated "Nursing aint for sissy's" You will do great!
thanks guys =]

I truly wish you the best in Nursing school and career!
Have you ever done career day at a hospital with a nurse or volunteer in a Hospital before?
I know you like the uniform and the smell of the hospital
You did not mention the love of Patients
Have you ever been around patient or were you a patient before? ( you do not have to answer any of these questions.
I hope you success in your Career as and become a RN and continue on for your BSN,MSN and PHD now that would be a amazing story!
You be a nurse for all the reason that are right to you and not your Family
Someday they will see you made the right choice
Your Dad is right, Hospitals are not as clean as they should be
and Nursing does include rinsing out a urinal or cleaning up a bed with dirty linens with multiple bacteria,Virus etc.. the air you will breath at times is not the safes sometimes you will find that out after a correct DX of a Pt's condition is made. ( this happens in the best of hospitals) or when a Epidemic hits and know one really knows the true dangers of being exposed to it causes in the long term. Just remember at the end of your shift/tour to pat yourself on the back of all the things you did get accomplished that 8 to 12 hour shift.
Yes you are in a combat zone of diseases with sick patients at times or a sick coworker. The TV shows except real live Hospital shows show how it can be.
If I were you when you graduate go work at Durham VA Hospital the benefits, equipment to work with and the 98% Patient treat with the respect you deserve.Every year you will be make a self evaluation and report your personnel growths, they will help you grow and pay for your education and also 5 weeks off that you will actually be allow to take off! and 11 Holidays some you will have to work you will be paid double time when you do. You will have sick days, Time off for Family that sicks.
Also beware of Horizontal Hostility : Nurses eating thier young.
I am just giving
I am just giving you the heads up on reality of being a nurse
Maybe you will become a NP,Manager, Nursing Educator
or a fantastic bedside Nurse. I hope you do continue on this path you choose in life. sincerely from a >30yrsRN
Oh wow, that's really cool.
And your right, I didn't mention my *future* patients. I should have, but I really do care about them. I worked in the hospital and then got a job offer with better pay in home health so I took it. I loved all of my patients. :-)
thank you for your insight, it's nice to have someone to talk to about my nursing! :-)

Amanda,
Back in the day - we referred to this as a "calling" - not an obsession . Try using that phrase - it puts a much more positive spin on your ambitions. It may be waaaay out of fashion now, but among my age group (older than dirt), this was a primary reason many of us chose nursing - it's not what we do, it's what we are. When we discovered nursing, it was like 'coming home' and knowing that was where we were meant to be. Yep - very old fashioned.
Sometimes old fashioned is the best way! I'm only 19 years old and I get along better with "older' people. I think it was because I was home schooled. And I agree with you, a calling is probably a better way of saying it!!!!
