Do you think it is unhealthy for me to read so much in preparation for nursing school ?
I tend to read A&P, Microbio, Nursing books. I also research nursing careers as if I already have a degree in nursing. I do think it is important to look ahead and plan for the future, but am I setting myself up for disappointment.
Aspirin thanks for the encouraging words. My nursing advisor and instructor advised me to read ahead to be a step ahead of the pack. Being that I am a male and I will stick out more, I know that the ladies will be competitive. I am not reading to memorize the information. I am reading to familiarize myself with the information, so it wont be a shocker once it is presented to me in complex fashion.
I think it's great that you're taking initiative to read things about nursing on your own time. Yeah.. like Danny said, it may or may not directly help you in nursing school.. but you're still supplementing your knowledge base and that's awesome. I wish I had that kind of dedication!
Another thing that you could do now that would be beneficial, if you're not already, would be volunteer work or a work as a CNA. Just a thought, but still...good job!
I obsessed a lot, I still had a life and all that, but I was on the wait list for 3.5 years so I had a lot of time to obsess. It hasn't hindered me so far in school. This site was my biggest obsession and it helped me a lot. I felt when we got to certain topics I was ahead of the game and already knew what it was about.
Ha! I'm obsessing right now too! :stdnrsrck:I start in January and could not be more excited! Yet who knew that I could possibly be this:yelclap::anpom: excited and :chair:scared at the same time?!!!!!!:icon_hug: Good Luck to you and my advice is(even though I am just a student) like most of the posters, try to create a balance. That is what I am doing. I am about to leave a job that I love with good people in order to pursue my dreams. Along with obsessing I'm shooting forward on a hope and a prayer!!!!

Yes, it is very unhealthy. College is a time to get wasted every night; get into fights; have flings and get arrested. You need to watch Animal House and model that behavior to be successful.
Whatever you did to get into the program worked for you. Why change it? Yes, you should give yourself some time to rest your mind and let the material sink in...be it, exercise, video games, TV or whatever. I guess you have to calibrate how much studying it takes for you to own the material.
When I was in school I recorded the lectures, burned them to CD, uploaded them to my Ipod, rinse and repeat. I'd go to bed with my ipod on so I could listen to the material during my sleep. Be creative about how you are learning. If you're having fun while learning then keep on it. I didn't really sit down for 8 hours at a time and cram. I'd make note cards of the lecture that I burned that day and I'd keep them on me at all times and casually go through them throughout the day.
Go to Borders and look at their nursing school books. I'd get one on nursing school strategy. Kaplan sells a book like that for rather cheap.
