Pregnancy after miscarriage

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Published

As some on this board know I had a miscarriage 2 weeks ago. I was 5 wks ob. My questions are:

What makes the MD decide to do an D & C? My doctor did not mention it so I figured I was too early to need one. But some people I have spoke with say that they or someone they know had a D & C after a miscarriage that was early in pregnancy like mine.

And second....

I had no period in June d/t being pregnant, so how will my cycle be now? Will it pick up like this never happened or what?

Thanks very much in advance.

I'm so very sorry about your miscarriage {{{{HUGS}}}}. I'm not a medical expert by any means, but I have had 3 miscarriages (one at 6, 10, and 13 weeks). My OB did a D&C each time because (excuse me if this is graphic), passing everything on your own can be painful & in some cases traumatic. I think you can also end up with an infection. Each time I had a D&C, they also placed me on antibiotics afterward. Please call your doctor and ask him why he is not doing a D&C. Your body should get back on track soon, sometimes it can take a couple of months.

Misti, let me start out by sending you a HUGE cyber-hug in your loss. I, too, experienced the horrible loss due to miscarriage at nearly 8 weeks' gestation myself in March. I know your pain.

I was NOT D and C'd either. Often, in early losses, it is not necessary if it is believed all parts of the conceptus are passed. Mine was verified by u/s and by personal identification of them. I cramped HORRIBLY and BLED HEAVILY for about 10 days after my m/c/.

Some things to watch for: Excessive bleeding...filling pads and pads ...keep an accurate count and CALL ER IF YOU ARE SATURATING A PAD AN HOUR FOR SEVERAL HOURS w/o LETUP. Also, any fever over 100.4, or foul-smelling discharge is often indication of infection. These problems need the attention of your doctor or the ER.

My period returned to "pretty much" normal 2 months later. The first period occured about 40 days after and was quite heavy and I passed some quarter-sized clots. Fortunately, it was only 3 days. My next period was NORMAL, 35 days later. And, now, it would appear I am ontrack. So, from an experienced OB nurse and fellow- miscarriage-sufferer, my heart goes out to you. If you need anything, pls PM ME! Good luck!

((((((((((Mitzi)))))))))) and a :kiss to you. My deepest sympathy for the loss of your baby. I pray your system will get back on track in good time, and that you'll once again be blessed in utero with child that you carry to term, birth in gladness and joy, and cherish the crying baby after he/she makes his/her entrance into the world. Since I'm not an OB/GYN expert, I shouldn't guess as to how long it will take your cycles to return to normalcy. Sleepyeyes sounds like she was your best help in that department. :kiss

[[[[[[[ misti_z]]]]]]]...I'm sooo very sorry to hear about your terrible lost..:o. I have been there also...twice..:o! Once prior to having my first, and after having my daughter. I wasn't D&C'd either tiime. I won't go into the details as I still think about them after more than 25yrs..:o. I can't tell you how long it took for my body to go back to normal. But I can say...I don't remember any problems. I totally agree with the advice you have already received. But I would say....that watch out in making any decisions at this time. I remember my emotions where kind of like a roller coaster for a while.

Take care of yourself...and keep love ones, and good friends close..
