I live in La La Land (Los Angeles) and in recent years, it really has become "La La" land. This trend of putting a "La" on the front of EVERY name irks the crap out of me. As well as the APOSTROPHES (come on people, those are NOT accent marks) in the middle of names for no good reason.

    e.g. LaCha'nel. what the h*ll is that???

The most stupid names I've seen lately have been liquor names, along the lines of Alize, Hennessey, Remi Martin.

As for home grown first son almost had an unusual name: Thelonius. After the jazz musician Thelonius Monk. My son's Godmother discouraged me on that one (besides, Monk already has a son who's his name sake). So my son became Sebastian James. His first name means 'revered' in Greek...and the middle is his late grandfather's middle name.

And my second son is Solomon Alexander. His father and I haggled over the first name, but I'd had it in mind since Sebastian came along. The middle name is his father's doing. My poor baby will have a heck of a time when writing time comes along. His last name is hyphenated with mine and his father's. It's like this -------- _ --------. That combined with his first and middle...or even just his first will REALLY help him learn the alphabet. :imbar

No offense but sometimes when I hear weird names I wonder how educated these people are that name their kids these names. Of course, I'm not talking about ALL weird names but some of them almost seem obvious. An old boyfriend of mine....his mom was a RN said that she knew of a lady that had a baby girl in the hospital where she worked and named her "Female" (pronouced it "Fa Molly". Someone said that she saw the birthcertificate and it said "female" for the sex and the mother put "Female" for the name.....

I know what you mean. In the NICU, we'll ask the parents what the baby's name is so we can put it on the crib card. Sometimes they'll be like, "Oh, I don't know how to spell it," or will be confused as to where they want the hypen and/or apostrophe. Yes, AND/or. We've had kids with more than a dozen letters in their first names, with multiple punctuation marks. Then the parents get VERY offended when you can't pronounce these weird names correctly. Um, hello, you totally MAKE UP this name with a bunch of letters and I'M the one that's in the wrong? :angryfire

I'd rather see kiddos named after things that are words but not really meant to be names. At least you know how to say it!

Also have seen way too many kids in the NICU named Destiny, Heaven, Angel, Miracle, etc.

I'm not sure if I posted this before... don't think so. But there is a woman who comes to our ER with the name Snowann. Yup.. SNOW. Apparently it is because she was born in late April and it was snowing. She was born in the seventies. Makes you wonder what they were smoking doesn't it?
