Just wanted some incite on what different hospitals do in regards to blood sugars/glucometers on all newborns? Do you automatically do them on all newborns? Thanks

We don't unless the babe is symptomatic, LGA, or mom had GD. I think you're lookin for trouble if you do it on all of them! LOL!

not everyone. if less than 5 lbs. or more than 8.5 lbs., infant of dm mom, low (less than or = 6 at 5 min.) apgars, low temp 96.8 or less, seem to be in distress (ex. need o2 support to maintain pulse ox above 95%), suspected sepsis or birth defect. less than 37 weeks gestation or more than 41 weeks. or symptomatic. whew!! sounds like a lot doesn't it?

We do about the same for the well babies. Also done on admission to the NICU and within 2-4 hours of hanging new IV fluids. Also, whenever we happen to be drawing labs. Or 2 hours later if we have had to give insulin.

The previous hospital I worked at we did them on all newborns. My current hospital does them only if SGA, LGA, if mom was diabetic, or they are symptomatic

Our blood sugar policy is like the above, LGA, SGA, diabetic mom's, UKNOWN/UNTREATED GBS, suspected sepsis, or s/s of blood sugar instability.

SGA, LGA, less than 37 weeks, get accuchecks on admission and then x 2 AC. Symptomatic, or Temp.

we do 3 AC blood sugars during transition on babies of group b strep moms, sga, lga, and of diabetic moms.We continue to do AC glucoses on sga and lga until we get 3 above 40 in a row.

we do blood sugars on sga, lga, diabetic moms, meconium, low apgars. We do a series of 3.

All babes get one shortly after birth. SGA and LGA get a series of three
