Oakland University ABSN

Hi there, anyone getting ready to interview in the next couple months for the Oakland University Accelerated nursing program? Thought this would be a good place in share experiences! Good luck!

Also, does anybody in the program already have any advice for the next couple agonizing months? Thanks in advance!

I haven't heard about opening up to 75 slots either, but it would be great if it did! Did anyone actually ask the interviewers what semester we were all interviewing for? I thought it was for may 2011 cohort and I also heard january 2011. I was just curious if anyone knew for sure.

I can also confirm they increased to 75 seats, starting in May. THey stated it in the orientation this past Tuesday. They moved many students up, and I was one of them. I was slotted for Fall.

That is really cool about it being 75 seats a cohort, so it is starting this May of 2010?

Yes. I am in the May cohort and there were well over 50 people in the orientation. Instructors talked about there being 75 and the recruiter lady said she moved 25 up to accommodate.

I talked to a student that was moved all the way up from the Winter term.

They must feel they have alot more room. We took the tour of the lab, it's very nice.

Melbell, They told me that I was interviewing for January 2011. This is all making sense now since in the past you would need to add 1 - 1.5 years to when you start. So, with the increased spots, we will be in January 2011 if not sooner. I'm excited. Oakland has it going on right now with increased spots. I know Wayne hasn't taken more than 48 for the entire year!!!! I'm pumped.

Also, Thanks Firehawk for the information :)

I am sure it is only like that right now because they have the extra seats floating around. But I would bet you in a few more semesters it will be back to the 1-1.5 year wait. So you are falling into this program at just the right time.

Do you remember how many students will interview for each cohort?? I know it's rolling admission but for our interview session, there were about 96 spots. Can I assume 96 people interview for 50-75 spots or do they do other interview sessions?? I just think the odds are more favorable than other schools which is a good thing.

I am pretty sure there were 100 that interviewed for the 50 spots in my cohort at the time. I think when they decided to move the whole year of classes to Riverview instead of just the first semester, they must have made the executive decision to increase the spots to 75. If you're asking will they now interview 150 people and take the best 75, I really can't answer. It would make sense though judging on what they've been doing.

I thought they said that they will interview as many applicants each semester that meet the minimum requirements. One of my classmates asked at his interview and was told that there are a total of 91 applicants being interviewed right now. Also, just because there are 75 slots open doesn't mean that they will fill all those slots with applicants from our group. Unfortunately, meeting the minimum requirements doesn't guarantee we will get in.

It's a business, they'll fill the slots. I'd love to think it's purely based on requirements, the person, whether the interviewers believe someone will make it, etc. But, if there's ever a situation where they have 70 spots filled, they're going to take the next 5 people even if they feel they have a smaller chance of making it.

It's still a business. After having been through a full degree, and seeing what tuition rates did at the downturn of the economy, I will never doubt that again.

I agree with Firehawk, they will fill the spots one way or the other. But I also agree that they won't just take anyone just to fill a spot. If they don't think you will succeed, I don't think they will admit you period. It's their reputation and the NCLEX pass rate is also important. Anyone can do fairly well in the 5 pre-reqs but doing well in nursing school is another thing. But it is a business and they will definitely not let seats go unfilled - they will just move up other people who interview later. They have a constant pool of students waiting to get moved up so I think this is how it will work. I think it's a cool system. So it's my feeling most if not all of the spots for the next open term will be filled by this interview group. Just my thoughts. Hopefully we will all get some good news soon.

Oh, just another thing, I read in my paperwork(from Oakland) and it stated if you have a satisfactory interview, you would be conditionally recommended to the program - pending successful completion of the final three nursing pre-reqs. The key is satisfactory and not sure how this is defined by the admission team. I truly feel that if you meet their key requirements, interview well, show you passion for nursing - that should be enough to get in. I know of people who had good grades but had subpar interviews who did not get in(last year) so this is the make or break part of the process.
