NYU Fall 2014 ABSN

Published

Hello,

I have noticed there isn't a thread for those applying for NYU Accelerated Nursing Fall 2014. Let's share feedback, advice, stats, etc... I went to an open house today at NYU. They really do stress that since there is no interview, the personal statement is our chance to prove ourselves. They also said they get about 1,000 applicants and a Fall entrance class usually have about 150 students in it.

What part of the application process are you in?

How is the personal statement going?

How many pre-reqs do you have left?

I don't want anyone to take it the wrong way. It's my observations and findings. If you want to go for the MEPN then go for it. I'm still applying to those programs because I don't want to limit my options. But, theres just a gut feeling that having a BSN would be an advantage to finding a job off the bat in a major city. Which I still think is crazy lol. Just, the masters seems more valuable because not everyone has one. However, I attended the UCLA open house and one of the students found a job at a well known hospital before she graduated. So, there's hope.

@morganw1 I agree. The accBSN route is definitely a safer bet and more practical, especially if you're not sure you want to specialize in a particular field. But I'm pretty certain I want to go the DNP route so direct-entry MSN will save a lot more time and money. As for finding jobs, both my parents are nurses and I'm sure I can get pretty well connected like you said.

From what I have read, I don't know why anyone would get their MSN and stop there.. I thought you got your MSN so that you could go into NP or CRNA programs?

*certificate programs..Although some places like my school (Loyola) the MSN and NP is combined into one program, whereas others you get your MSN and then have to go back to enroll in the certificate program (if you want it) Hospitals most likely wont hire an MSN who hasn't specialized (NP or CRNA) because they have to pay that person more than they would just hiring a BSN (if that makes sense? It's past midnight here and I am a tired zombie)

@planemo I think most people pursue an MSN with the intention of specializing (NP, CNRA, etc.).

I talked to someone who did a generalist MSN program with the intention of getting her NP certificate after working a little bit. This is what she said: I attended the program originally with the intention of becoming a nurse practitioner, but since I love my job now and don't have any plans to go back for a nurse practitioner degree I probably would have been better off going to a 1 year Accelerated BSN program, it would have been faster and cheaper and gotten me to the same place.

So I guess my point is that you have to be 110% positive you want that NP (or soon DNP) before choosing to get an MSN. If you're not entirely sure, go the accBSN route.

Is anyone else still waiting for their application items to be checked off as complete?

hey you guys, when i log in to the NYU portal, and click on the Albert LogIn button, and then click on the "admission status" button, it says 'You are not authorized for this page', when before, it would give me all of the items i had submitted with the applicatino with the checkmarks next to it. are any of you getting this message? it's hella worrying me! :(

Did you check with them VIA Albert or phone?

@kdacayo I checked online. I guess they haven't looked at my transcripts yet.
