NYU ABSN FAll 2021

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey, this is super duper early but I figured we could get some questions, fears, or concerns talked through until March 1, 2021, for priority or April 1, 2021, for the regular decision to NYU's ABSN 15 month program for non-nurses. Please don't be afraid, Please share stats if you are comfortable doing so. It really does help cohorts after us figure out strengths and weaknesses to be better applicants. Hey, after all, It's all about helping each other out at the end of the day, right! Don't be shy, talk about where you're from and things you may be worried about for the application process. As well as other schools you might be applying for!

Like (most) the rest of you, I'm sitting here saddened by my NYU rejection that I received today. I promised myself that I would post details about whatever decision I got, to help out the rest of you, so here goes nothing:

- I officially submitted my application on the last day before the deadline for "Priority decision". I put that in quotes because it's ***ing stupid because what was the point of me stressing over my application if I still had to wait till the very end to get a result? I had such high respect for the NYU admin staff, but this process lowered my ranking of them. For the record, the priority deadline was March 1st.

- I'm a male in my mid-to-late 20s, been in higher education roughly the whole time since 18, with about a year break somewhere thrown in.

- My first degree is in Economics, so as you can imagine most of my courses did not meet the prerequisite requirements set by most (and NYU's) nursing programs. After I got my Bachelor's, I went to study Law, then Financial Investigations (grad school), until dropping it and making the switch to nursing in January of 2020. [PRE-COVID TIMES! Oh the unaware and naive me :') if only I could relive those times haha]

- So I went back to a local community college in NYC to take the prereqs for NYU. Started in Spring of 2020 till now. This Summer I am taking my last class required to be admitted into NYU, but now that I'm not, I'm seriously considering dropping it and retaking it in the Fall, when on-campus learning is scheduled to return.

- My Econ degree grades were decent. Cumulative GPA was like 3.1/3.2, but Major GPA was like 3.7. My grades for the prereqs taken within the last 2 years were good. 4.0 first semester, then an A-, B, A, B-. I was okay with those grades, but now that I was denied entry, I'm not so sure ?

- I don't have any prior medical knowledge/experience. I've been working in retail for the past 6-7 years. And my current job I've been at for 4 years.

Well, that's about it. I don't know what pushed me out of the running for admission. Being a male with decent grades I (foolishly) assumed I'd get a seat. I know the field is dominated by women, so a man is often welcomed for diversity. Same with how women are encouraged to apply to Comp. Sci. and Engineering fields. Maybe it's my age, maybe it's my bachelor's GPA or current prereq GPA, maybe it's my letters of recommendation or personal statement. Or maybe (what I think most likely), it's just that there's plenty of a lot more qualified candidates applying for the same position.

What's next? Well for starters, I'm probably going to stay of this chat for a while. As I'm sure like most of you here, I've been checking this thread and refreshing my undergrad portal multiple times a day ever since I first applied. It was mentally exhausting. And it's not so much the sting of rejection that's bothering me, it's the late answer, that now I have to basically rethink all my future plans for the remaining half of year and most of 2022. It sucks that I have to push off nursing a full another 6 months (or God-forbid 12 months!), but what sucks more is that it's so sudden and so late. Have to change everything now. I only applied for NYU so perhaps I'll look into other choices for 2022.

I think all of us here who didn't get accepted should take some time off for themselves. I just called and told my girlfriend the news, and she's on her way over to see me. We're gonna drink and forget about this damn day and hope for a better one. No use crying over spilled milk, right? What's done is done, and it's time for the healing and acceptance to commence. All of us should do something that we really enjoy, and REMEMBER! IT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD IF YOU DIDN'T GET IN! One more time for yall:

IT. IS. OKAY. IF. YOU. GOT. REJECTED.

There will be other chances. Hell, maybe I'll reapply for 2022 and I'll see you sexy bastards in NYU in the future!

I hope all of you the best.

This made me feel a lot better. My boyfriend is taking me hiking this weekend to make me feel better. We’re lucky to have people like that to make us feel better. Please consider applying to Pace (Westchester campus) for January start. It will finish at the same time as this NYU class will finish. Also, you seem like the motivation I need so if you need a nursing friend, please feel free to add me on IG. (@nadiauddin)

good luck and thank you for sharing!

I also received my rejection. Unfortunately, this was the only program that I applied to as of right now because they do not require labs. I took Microbiology and Physiology during my undergrad at UC Irvine, however, it was only the lecture portion and most nursing programs require a lab component as I am sure most of you know LOL. I was really hoping I would get accepted to NYU so I wouldn't have to repeat both courses JUST for a 1-2 credit lab but here we are ?. With that being said, I was curious about taking Microbiology + lab online through Portage Learning and was wondering if anyone has taken courses through Portage Learning and if they recommend it?? I want to get both these courses done this Summer so I can apply like crazy this upcoming fall for several programs and maybe even NYU again for Spring 2022!

Receiving a rejection sucks, but just know we are ALL bad b*tches? regardless of our admission decision. We are ALL capable of becoming amazing nurses and everything happens for a reason. The universe could be guiding some of us to a different school where we might flourish more and meet incredible people. If ANY of you would like to stay in touch and support/guide/give advice throughout other application processes, please send me a message and let's connect! We got this!! Best of luck to everyone who got accepted, you are more than deserving and will kick *** in the program!❤️

Future NP, that was really nice what you said! And I'm not afraid to admit that it made me tear up. Thank you.

I'm in the same boat. Rejected from the only program I applied to. I'm taking a Summer course as my last prereq for the program, but might drop it now, given the news.

I've never done Portage Learning so I'm sorry I'm no help there. But I do have a question. You said you're considering reapplying for Spring 2022. I was too, but my rejection letter said I'd have to wait until next academic year. Which I figured is Fall 2022.... which is sooooo far. If I can apply again for Spring 2022 then I most definitely will. If not, I'll have to apply elsewhere and then go there if I get accepted because I can't be waiting forever for this damn school (even if it is my dream school).

So yeah, you think we can reapply for Spring 2022?

Yeah it's definitely tough since it's the only program we applied to and we don't have another program to fall back on or anything.? But, this just means it wasn't our cycle to be accepted and our time of celebration will come in the near future!?

Mmm you honestly might be right there and I didn't really put much thought into it. I just mentally said "Okay well let's just reapply for Spring 2022" but you're right, the letter does say we can only reapply for the next academic year, not semester (which is honestly pretty lame because why aren't we allowed to give it another go if we already meet the requirements?). I think my new game plan is to really look into direct entry MSN programs as my ultimate goal is to become an NP and the application process/deadlines is coming up this fall. I really hate the thought of being stagnant for an entire year for a Fall 2022 start but there is really nothing else I can do. I would much rather prefer a direct entry MSN program over an ABSN program so maybe my rejection was the universe guiding me to a path more suitable for my long term goal.

Please don't give up! Complete that course this Summer! The only thing standing in your way of giving up and walking away is yourself. Prove to NYU that you are more than deserving of being accepted into the program and come back swinging even harder! You got this! I got this! WE GOT THIS!❤️

If any of you want to connect and work through applications together and just rant over application processes - feel free to add my Instagram @jacobhowatt. I only provide a very safe, inclusive space and I don't want any of you to feel alone throughout any process.❤️ Just to give you all an idea of where my application was at, here ya go:

1. I submitted my application on February 1st, well before either of the deadlines. So I am sure you can imagine my frustration with how long they took to get back to me only for it to be a rejection and not even a waitlist offer.?

2. I graduated from UC Irvine (WOOO SoCal represent!!) in June 2020 with a B.A. in Sociology and a Minor in Biological Sciences. I was originally a Biological Sciences major with an emphasis for medical school, however, after some self-reflection and realization, I decided to pursue nursing instead. I faced several hardships during my time at UCI and was even homeless for the duration of a quarter where I lived in my car and couch surfed. During this quarter, I struggled immensely with my mental/physical health and ultimately ended up flunking out of Ochem II. This of course absolutely tanked my overall GPA and it has felt like a never ending battle to recover from it. My overall GPA at the time of matriculation was a 2.95, however, I have since raised it to a 3.1 through postbacc courses and finishing up some prereqs. My overall Prerequisite GPA is a 3.6 (thankfully).

3. I currently work at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA as a Medical Scribe in the Smidt Heart Institute. I have worked here for over 10 months now and I believe my clinical experience is approaching 2,000 hours. I was really hoping this would significantly increase my chances of being accepted as the Smidt Heart Institute is ranked 3rd in the nation for having the best cardiology program and one of the doctors I scribe for wrote a letter of recommendation for me. Not to mention, Cedars-Sinai is literally the sister hospital of Mount Sinai in NYC! *sigh*

I wanted to be completely transparent with all of you because we do all come from different walks of life. We WILL be nurses some day and we WILL have our moment to celebrate an acceptance too! Best of luck to all of you no matter where you go or decide to do. You are all worthy and deserving of success and happiness.

so fun story, turns out I need to retake statistics to register for classes in the fall at NYU, because I took it literally just over 10 years ago, or I can't begin the accelerated program. I spoke with admissions and they said that if I wanted to be able to start the ABSN/clinicals I'd need to retake a statistics class by the end of August. I already have Chem and Dev. Psych to do this Summer, so I literally don't think I will have time or the ability to do that. It's a huge bummer because I really would love to have a chance but I am truly not sure what to do. I could take the course on Portage but it's a gamble because it's just so much to get done and I worry I'd fail if I tried to cram so much in. Has anyone had success in getting them to budge on the 10 year limit for stats? I passed in 2010 so I'm just very conflicted. anything like that happened to anyone else?

Hey there, NYU does not budge on prereqs and the time limit, you won't be made an exception.

I took Statistics again too because it had been over 10 yrs for me. Took it at HCCC (Hudson county community collge) in Jersey city. I took it remote and it was one live lecture a week with homework on my own time. It was very straightforward and I could handle it with 2 other classes. They have different sections such as "remote" (live lecture on zoom), or "online" which is everything uploaded already and you do everything on your own time hitting the deadlines. I think you could handle it honestly! Try HCCC, the "Summer I" session just started on 5/24- ending early July! Summer II session is 7/13-8/18. It is MAT-114:

For those of you that were accepted into the program, did you also receive a physical letter of acceptance or was it only online?

Hi, I did not receive a package from the school; I only received the online pdf of my acceptance. Not sure if they mail that kind of stuff out to transfer students.

HIGHLY recommend AGAINST going into the direct entry programs. Students who graduate from these programs are not highly looked upon due to their lack of clinical and bedside experience amongst many other things. Many hiring managers on the floors tend to look away when an applicant comes in under this pedigree.

No offense taken! When I took both physiology and Microbiology during undergrad it was only the lecture portion, no lab. NYU is one of the only ABSN programs that do no require labs so I figured it does not hurt to apply since I had the application fee waiver!? I'll be completing both labs this Summer and then applying to multiple programs this fall. I'm literally only 22 so I have PLENTY of time for a program?

I don't entirely agree with you tbh and that's a very one sided view on the two programs. The direct entry MSN programs provide the same foundation as the ABSN program and they typically take the same length to complete. There are programs for both paths that do not necessarily prepare you the best and it ultimately comes down to YOUR performance and how YOU do during clinical rounds. Also, the classes are relatively the same across the board so there is not much of difference in the type of education you are receiving.
