NYU ABSN Fall 2013 Entry

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello everyone! I have submitted my application and my transcripts to NYU for the ABSN program beginning in fall 2013! I am very excited but surprised that we will be hearing so late about an admission decision. Is anyone else applying?

BTW congratulations on getting accepted!!!!! :woot:

I have a question!

if you dont mind me asking, what were your "qualifications" and also your class mates.

Im really nervous because idk if what I have was enough for them. I have volunteered, done an internship, doubled majored (Health and Psy), my jobs were all educational (tutor for 4 years), I was the co-founder and president of an organization in my school. I'm trilingual and I had amazing recommendation letters and i believe that my personal statement was strong. I messed up big time in one semester due to personal matters and I'm worried that will ruin my chances. :(

Total cost for the four semesters at NYU was more than $80,000, which does not include housing/books/living expenses - definitely a big commitment. For me it made the most sense considering the other options in NYC; otherwise I'd probably still be waiting to actually start somewhere.

I did get some scholarships and other financial aid but the bulk came from loans and my own money I had saved. In hindsight I'm sure I could have been more aggressive with applying for scholarships.

If you have other, more reasonable options with good programs I'd say you should definitely strongly consider them. NYU has a good program but not sure it's exponentially better to justify the cost difference.

I live in an apartment in Queens, which is much cheaper than most areas of Manhattan. It took me about 40 minutes to get to campus by subway, which isn't bad.

From what I understand NYU looks at a lot of things when making decisions - not strictly GPA and past academic records. My first degree is in journalism (3.6 GPA) and I have a master's in management (3.8 GPA) and had 15-years experience working in communications, marketing, an public relations. I had done no volunteer or other health-related work when I applied. So I think that shows that they aren't strictly looking for applicants who have worked in health care or have health care-related degrees. Hope that helps!

Thank you!

Scottnyc- Yeah so basically were talking 100,000 for a year. That's steep. You going back to further your education or working for now?

Thank you. Ive heard the same thing but how can one know if they are "NYU material"

this is my dream school and I'm very nervous to hear back. especially since we will be hearing back from them very soon. I did the priority deadline because I wanted to ensure that I look "good" as a candidate.

Heyyyy,

I found this in my Albert page.

"Admission decisions for Regular Decision candidates will be sent sometime on April 1st after 5pm. Admission decisions will not be available anywhere on this website. Decisions will not be released over the phone until 5 days after decisions have been released via email."

this spring break will be a tough one however hopefully a rewarding one.

I'm going to work for at least a year and then think about going back.

Scottnyc-

Have you secured employment yet? I suppose my biggest fear is borrowing such a large sum of money and having no means of paying it back.

Avas-

I accepted an offer a couple weeks ago and pending their background check and a physical I'll be starting in a few weeks. I feel extremely fortunate to have found something so quickly. The job market in NYC for new grads is pretty bleak right now, and having several hospitals close due to Sandy last fall hasn't helped.

But if you work hard to make contacts during your clinicals it should help down the road.

RhodyRed,

i'm not sure you will get this message, but i'm new to the forums so i can't PM you. i'm actually waiting to hear back from nyu right now to take pre-reqs there just like you are so that i can start the accelerated program in spring 2014. essentially, i am one semester behind you (granted i am accepted).

how long did it take you to hear back? what prereqs are you taking? is it possible to take AP, nutrition, microbio, and dev psych all in one semester? i hope you see this message! thanks!

Whatsmyname- That would be a real tough schedule but anything is doable. It would prepare you for nursing school but if you can split up micro and anatomy.
