Yes, I received the call basically asked why I wanted to work there which was easy, preference areas and campus :)

@jessie25. Were you invited to the new grad event as well or it was just the phone interview? And what did she say after you told her your preferences?

@kiki1984. Yes I was invited to the June 14th event. My preference areas were ICU, ER and Med-Surg. She just said okay and didn't ask me why I chose ICU. I think it's because last summer I interned in one of their ICUs so it was kinda indicated why I would choose the ICU [i think]. What about you?

@jessie my phone interview was 3 weeks ago and I was asked why I want to work at nyp and why I chose med surge. Then she told me about an opening position and whether I'm interested and said I will hear from them within 2 weeks for in person interview so I was never invited to the event and still haven't heard anything. Well... I really don't know what's going on but I hope the event goes well and you get some connections!! :)

That's great! Seems like you're one step ahead of the game. Will you be licensed in NY or will you be transferring your license. On the app it asked NYS License with 2 or 6 months. I am coming from NJ so I have a while to wait anyway. I am curious to know more about this event. I can't find anything on what to expect.

I'm licensed in NY. I think the event would be great. I'm guessing you will meet some nurse managers and you network from there. Good luck :)

I don't understand NYP. Is everyone here graduate with no experience. I applied to NYP and got an email saying that I need acute care experience. For the new grad position u shouldn't have experience. When I call them they said u need experience. I said for new nurses u don"t have it. I beleive NYP is expecting a lot of whites. No offense that is why they ask u your ethnicity.

I think it's a little ridiculous you're saying "they expect a lot of whites". They're a top organization so they can be picky, nothing to do with race.

And if you're a new grad, by experience they mean nurse's aide or extern experience. If you're past the new grad mark, you need a year of nursing experience. Again, nothing to do with race.

You are inaccurate in your assumption. All employers, as per Federal Regulations are obligated to inquire regarding gender, race, and veteran status. However these questions are optional and you are not required to respond to questions. This information is also removed from the application during the screening process to prevent such bias. This is audited on a regular basis. If you are truly believing that this is the case, the easy solution is simply not answer the optional questions as to race, gender and veteran status.

As quoted previously, one is expected to have recent acute care experience, even as a CNA (you stated that your recent CNA experience was long term care). You do not qualify for the new graduate program as you graduated 5 years ago. It's likely that the system is assuming that since you graduated 5 years ago you would have worked at some point as a registered nurse in the past five years....this is a fallacy of the computer system. It cannot realize that you were only licensed earlier this year. The computer has a list of criteria (is the candidate a licensed nurse in NY? Does the candidate have a BSN? did they graduate in the last 6 months? if not a new grad, does the candidate have recent work experience? Is the work experience in acute care?), if you do not meet the criteria then your application is automatically rejected. Granted these systems are in place and work most of the time to weed out the hundreds of applications for a few available jobs, but it is not perfect.

Your options at this point are to contact human resources or a recruiter to follow up on your application (a human can override the automatic rejects from the computer system) to explain that while you are not a new grad, you are a newly licensed nurse and therefore could not possibly have working experience as a nurse. Since your situation is unique, this may be beneficial for you to have a human manually review your application/resume. If nothing else, if you are professional and respectful you may make a valued contact in the hiring office so when an appropriate position opens up you will be on their mind.

Your other option is to seek non-hospital employment opportunities such as ambulatory care/outpatient, long term care, long term acute care (patients who have outstayed their hospital stay but still require acute care and often ICU level care), assisted living, rehab, or sub-acute care/rehab.
