NYC Nursing Internship/Externship Information

Published

Hey everyone!

I am currently in my second semester of nursing school in a BSN program. I am applying for summer externship programs in the NYC region. I wanted to make this posting to see if anyone has anything to say about the externships/internships that they applied for. If you did an externship/internship (gosh what is the difference?!) maybe you could tell us a little bit about the program and what happened to you after you completed it. Thank you so much everyone!:nurse:

Hey Avocado,

I'm only replying because no one else with first hand experience has. I didn't do an externship/internship (still don't know the difference) but several of my friends did. Two did externships at NYU and had a great experience. They were assigned a unit and a preceptor and worked there one on one with their preceptor, one for a summer and one for just a couple of weeks. They both said that getting to be in the clinical environment for so long was really helpful to their practice, as was getting the one on one attention. They were also guaranteed interviews around graduation time at NYU and that seems to be the general rule in NYC - doing an internship secures you a future job interview/job. Both are graduating in a few weeks and have already been offered a job or are on a job wait list now. Reason enough to do an internship in my book.

Hello! Yes I actually got the NYU externship and I'm debating with Sloan Kettering. They're right. IF you did well during the externship, they will ask you back. My sister is also a former extern and is now a nurse at NYU. There isn't much of difference between externship and internship because I also did my"internship" at Mt. Sinai. Telling you now. Go for any internship or externship, it will help you get a guaranteed job right after your graduation. Then once youre hired, expect to take a bunch of exam on math, ekg, etc.

I did my first internship before my junior year after I took medsurg I. I'm not sure if theyre taking any application tho but I know lenox hills just recently started accepting apps. Also, you will learn much more than your usual clinical because you get to do more hands on skills. Try to apply and good luck

This is probably so late to reply to. But I applied to NYU and was wondering when you heard back from them? This waiting game is torture!

Thank you in advance

This is extremely late...a few years later, but I figured this website helped me a lot while I was frantically applying to any externship position I could apply to, so I figured I would give my story and answer some questions for future students looking into externships. In reply to the original posting from nycnursing, internships/externships in the nursing world are essentially the same. I did actually look it up before and found out (in general) externships are more about learning the career and typically you are paid, while internships (non-nursing internships) are generally non-paid, but you're exposed to the field you're planning to work in. But again, there's no difference in nursing-world..so it doesn't really matter while looking for nursing externships--they're all experience and 100% worth it (even if they're not paid).

Anyway...I applied to a few hospitals determined to get anything I could find in hopes that the externship would guarantee me a job after graduation. I got interviews and offers from a few nyc hospitals (so I can answer questions about interview and stuff about HSS, Maimonides, Lenox, VSNY & NYUJD), but I ended up choosing NYU Langone because it was my first choice.

My experience was amazing. I met great nurses who were really supportive and very excited to teach me about procedures, disease processes and meds that I hadn't learned much about. I had A LOT of hands-on experience...10x more experience than in all my clinicals combined. I experienced the 12 hour shifts, 3 times in a row exhaustion. And finally, I felt significantly more confident talking to patients and dealing with different situations after 2.5 months and I owe it completely to the externship.

I don't regret it at all. Yes, most past externs from NYU get first dibs on RN jobs after graduation because HR told us we don't need to apply and just call to set up an appointment to talk to HR and they'll help us find jobs as long as we did well during our externships. I was super excited, but unfortunately after Hurricane Sandy hit and NYU went on a hiring freeze, externs from 2012 summer had no "guaranteed job" anymore. And that's where I am now...

Just passed my NCLEX (woo!), but I'm looking for jobs at other hospitals now too

Good luck to future externs :) you'll do great

also FYI in 2012, I heard back from them april 13th and interviewed the week after...that was one of the later dates though, so I know a few people interviewed at least 2 weeks before that

I'm currently in my first year of PBISON (actually tomorrow is my first day! >.

What should someone expect to be asked during the nyu externship interview?

Hi all! I am a nursing student from Georgia and my dream is to do an externship at NYU. For those who have been accepted to the program previously, what does it take to get an interview? What sort of GPA really gets you in? Also, do you need things like clubs, leadership positions, or volunteer experience? Thanks!
