NYC Community Colleges

For the RN program in Hostos, you need to go through:

(1) finish all the prerequisite courses(A&P 1, Chem 1 and 2, Pschology and some English).

(2) preclinical period: one semester. Students' need to take Nursing Concept (2-credit course).Students have test very week they meet.

(3) After you pass nursing concept with a "C", then you are officially labeled as "a nursing student". After another 2 years, then you are done.

I am taking Nursing concept this year and I think it is tough although I get all "A"s in all science courses. But the professor is good.

Still I am transferring next semester, to an Accelerated Program, because the program at Hostos is too long for me. BTW, since your gf already has a BA, why not go to some Accelerated one-year program?

My gf has decided to try a career in nursing after getting a BA in Criminology from John Jay last year. She got a late start in choosing schools and enrolled at Hostos CC in the Bronx this past semester, mostly taking pre-reqs (Psych, Med Terminology, Chem I). She was looking to get an Assoc in nursing to start. She was thinking about transferring but after reading here about how hard it is to get a seat in these CC programs, she is having second thoughts. The director of the program is really trying to keep her in HOSTOS and I was wondering why.

Does anyone know how good the HOSTOS nursing program is? How about other Community College programs such as BMCC or Bronx CC or LaGuardia?

I don't want to alarm your friend, but tell her to check out if Hostos obtained accrediation from the NLN or other agency. Last time I checked on Discover Nursing, they said they were not accredited. I had a problem with NYIT ( New York Institute of Technology) I thought all nursing schools were accredited and when I registered for the Spring 05 semester, I found out that the school was accredited, but not the nursing program. I immediately withdrew from the school and they did not tell me there was a withdrawal penalty. I attended Biochemistry two times and Physics once and the other three classes, they dropped as if I never attended. They stuck me with a $2,400 bill on attending. I am now fighting them and I am having them investigated by Albany, who gives the colleges and Universities their accrediation. I am not paying a bill where I only attended two times. I do not want your friend going through the same situation as I am. I also called up different hospitals and other colleges because I want to go into the masters program and they immediately told me that if the school is not accredited, you will not be able to obtain a job after finishing school. You will have to do the program all over again. Some places may let you slip by, but the majority of the places I called told me the same thing. So I was not taking any chances. Thank God, now I am starting an Accelerated program at The College of New Rochelle. I will start July 5 and finish December 2006. I have been blessed in finding an alternative school that would take me, because it is very hard to get into a program these days. After being rejected from practically 6 schools and being accepted into CNR, I have to say that I am very pleased.

Please find out if Hostos is accredited.

I am a Hostos new nursing student and the truth is that I wish I could have gone elsewhere. Hostos is extremely competitive, demanding, and expensive. Competitive because, peers are not as friendly as they should be, which I find to be very disturbing being that "nurses" are supposed to be united, caring, and nonjudgmental. Demanding because the faculty does not want the nursing students to work throughout the entire program, like we don't have family or bills to pay and last but not least expensive because they charge students for everything including entrance exams (NLN, ATI, & Writing Sample). For your knowledge, students are mandated to take the NLN every semester, which is $40. The faculty has got to improve! Not only are they discouraging at times but also nasty. I must admit the new coordinator Dr. O'Reilly is an asset to the nursing program, believe me when I tell you, things were crazy back then. My advice to your friend is if she decides to stay at Hostos, to not listen to anyone no matter how tough things get or as much as individuals try to discourage or put fear in her. I'm pretty sure the faculy is trying to prepare us for the "real world" but come on, give us a break! As if the program weren't stressful enough! Overall, Hostos has been ranked the best CC besides Lehman for nursing in the Bronx.
