:banghead:Hi everyone. I would like some feed back. Im very discouraged right now and feel ready to quit.
Last year I started attending OCC. Never been to school before, I scrimped to pay for it on my own. Dont have a job, 4 kids, broke.
I got all A's although Im nowhere near done with pre-req's
NWLB program i started trying to get since May1. I feel like they are messing with me all these months. After playing all their games I have discovered that they have no intention of giving me money for school. They have yet to tell me this, I figured it out on my own.
Wont pay for pre-req's. Originally told that pre-req's could get paid for if they are in the program. I guess thats not true.
I didnt get money from FASFA. I cannot even figure out how to pay for daycare let alone school.
This program doesnt seem to do any good unless you already have some school behind you.
I feel defeated and have been led on a wild goose chase. Back at square 1.
OK, update.....
Good news!!! I FINALLY got a call from DWD/Michworks on the 11th (yesterday). I met with the rep today and she told me that I was approved! There are a couple of hoops I still have to jump, but I'm not complaining if they're helping. I enrolled in another class for fall, just so I could get the full Pell. She told me that I could drop it and focus on my nursing classes only. Whatever Pell withdraws from my dropping to part time, NWLB will pick up.
When everything is official and my NWLB account is actually set up at the school, then I'll drop the class. But to be on the safe side, for now I'll keep it.
Anyway, to those that are still waiting, don't give up hope!
I too am in the process of seeing if I qualify for NWLB. I have to go on Sept. 8th and supply all of the required documentation. One thing I am a little miffed about is that at orientation they stated if the position you held when laid off is not on the "endangered occupation list", you won't qualify for NWLB. My actual title was Warranty/Customer Service Manager. I highly doubt that is considered a not in demand field, however, I worked in the residential construction field and trust me when I tell you...that field is definitely on the downward slope. I just hope that technicality doesn't keep me from getting assistance. Oh well if it does cause I WILL still pursue my nursing degree, it'll just be a little harder:)
My first visit was sometime in early May. First orientation was on the 7th, I brought in all of my required documentation on the 8th. I took my test on the 12th, got my results on the 13th and was told it would be a few weeks before I heard anything, but THEY would call ME (sounding as if to say we're too busy to deal with a bunch of incoming calls, so just wait to hear from us). I heard absolutely nothing and had all but given up hope (after 2 unreturned calls...no pressure..lol), when finally on August 11th they called me to come in for questions about the school. On the 12th I met with someone, who told me I was approved and where else to go to have my paperwork completed. I am to go back tomorrow to turn this work in...but hopefully I'll be done with my part because school starts for me in 7 days. Hope this helps, and hope you get what you need, and in time!

I just found this thread, so sorry for the delayed response, but I am one that doesn't know what to make of NWLB. I start the Nursing Program on the 21st of this month (all pre reqs are done) and I have yet to hear from MichWorks. I started the process of applying, testing, orientations, and bringing in all necessary documents in the beginning of May. I was told after my test results were given to me that it would be quite a few weeks before I heard anything back, but they would call me. Well, I'm still waiting on a call. I've called my case worker twice (once 6 weeks in, the second 8 weeks in, inquiring on how my case was going, if my I did all I needed to, and to be sure my first message was received). I still haven't heard back, so I'm just going under the assumption that I'm not getting it. It sucks that they give you this hope, but what is worse is that my worker has not called once in nearly 3 months...even if it is to tell me that they can't help.
I NEED CLOSURE!!! lol
I still hold out hope that they will help me, but I'm moving on as if they aren't.
To those who are helped through their "in house" programs (what my worker called it) congratulations....maybe that's an easier process for the state so it's easier to get help that route.
Whatever road we need to take to get to Destination RN, so be it. Good fortune upon you all!
