NWLB is crap

U.S.A. Michigan

:banghead:Hi everyone. I would like some feed back. Im very discouraged right now and feel ready to quit.

Last year I started attending OCC. Never been to school before, I scrimped to pay for it on my own. Dont have a job, 4 kids, broke.

I got all A's although Im nowhere near done with pre-req's

NWLB program i started trying to get since May1. I feel like they are messing with me all these months. After playing all their games I have discovered that they have no intention of giving me money for school. They have yet to tell me this, I figured it out on my own.

Wont pay for pre-req's. Originally told that pre-req's could get paid for if they are in the program. I guess thats not true.

I didnt get money from FASFA. I cannot even figure out how to pay for daycare let alone school.

This program doesnt seem to do any good unless you already have some school behind you.

I feel defeated and have been led on a wild goose chase. Back at square 1.

Goldie-

Did you know you were going to do nursing when you first started the NWLB process? I was wondering if I'd still have to go to all the seminars about new careers etc. even though I was already accepted and committed to nursing. I think NWLB is still my best bet.

I was just at MichWorks yesterday and spoke to somone about the NWLB program.

In order to qualify your income must be less than $40,000 yearly. Even if you are married (or single) $40,000 is the cutoff.

They won't approve the Nursing program because with pre-req's it is a 3 year program, not 2.

Have you thought of choosing a different route first? Maybe doing an LPN program so they will pay for it, then getting a job in a hospital and having the hospital pay for you to complete your RN education?

Or you can possibly do Patient Care Tech or CNA. I know at some schools some of the pre-req's are the same (english, A&P etc) so you could at least get some of your pre-req's paid for.

Good luck! I hope it turns out good for you. I'm going to the seminar next Thursday to see if I qualify.

Hey szyman27 I did know that I wanted to do nursing but I was already enrolled at the community college taking my pre reqs and was just going to get in a cna/pca program when my career coach at michworks ask me if she could find out about a lpn program, would I jump on the oppurtunity of course I said yes! And thats how I end up going to the school I go to now Detroit Healthcare Career Center and there program is great in my opinion because you will here other people say other things but its a ladder program and you have to get accepted into the Lpn part but its great and I am glad that I chose that school instead of the one I would of orginally gonna go to because it was only cna and pca . So when I graduate next year I will finish taking the rest of my pre reqs at the community college and then head to a rn program and so on until I am an NP! The only problem I am having is finding a job with no exp in healthcare besides my clincals I am still seeking employment but I know I will have a job soon! Good Luck!

Goldie,

I am going to have the exact same problem finding a job without experience. I am trying my best to get something in a hospital when I am in school, but since I am new to the healthcare industry the lack of any sort of relavant experience is a big problem. Good luck!

ok, well I cant get into the Lpn program either. Its still pre-reqs they wont cover even tho its only a 1 year program.

I just called and talked to the counselor at NWLB, she is going to save my paperwork for me. I am mabye going to have to start the process all over again and at the least she said i will have to do the testing all over again next year.

Be careful about how much of your time and gas you waste going to Michigan Works. People who work there are not straight forward and will string you along for months, then pull the rug out from under you.

Because of the information I was givin, I am probaly not going to get my student loans in time for Fall and will be that much further behind.

If you have no college you will not qualify for this program to get an associates because of all the pre-req's needed.

If you only want a certificate it might work for you depending on where you want to go to school. Most technical schools programs exceed $5000 and it is still up to you to find the rest of the money. Depending on what you want to do, that could be thousands of dollars out of your own pocket. I was thinking, if I have to be in debt, I will at least have an associates out of it, not just some dead end certificate.

I might just take 1 class this fall and put it on a credit card, havent decided.

Also, good luck to all of you at Detroit Health Career Center.

that could be thousands of dollars out of your own pocket.

Well either way at least they are helping people, I mean you can't expect them to pay for everything.

I agree. Any money they want to give me is welcome!

I'll be done with my pre-reqs in about two weeks and am already accepted into a program so hopefully I will be all set. I guess I will now soon!

I'm not out trying to work the system.

I only expected after being told I qualify for the program that I was going to get some money for school.

Im not the only one who has been misled. I talked to a couple of other people at my school who had similar problems there.

Anne,

I didn't mean to imply that I thought you were trying to work the system. It sucks that they mislead you and weren't straight up with you. I just meant that they can't pay for everything. I totally understand why they would pay for an actualy program and not prereqs. They need to make sure the person is committed.

I just meant that they can't pay for everything.

That's what I meant as well, I didn't think you were working the system at all. It's there for a reason, cause the people of Michigan are in dire need of it. I just meant that you can't expect to further your education and get a degree without spending any of your own money.

Hello all! Anne well the school I attend is in Detroit and you don't have to take pre reqs but its a ladder program I don't know how far in Oakland County you stay but it might be worth a try. The school is downtown Detroit. You take a few other courses first, like Health Care Career success, CNA, pca and then apply to the LPN program and if accepted you proceed they also have medical adminstrative assistant its a really good program! If you have any questions feel free to ask!
