NVCC Online Nursing Program

Published

For those of you attending NVCCs nursing program; What are your thoughts on their online program? I am seriously considering applying for it rather than the traditional program. I have taken several classes online as well as some on campus and felt as though the classes taken on campus (especially NAS 161) required so much self study that I might as well have taken it online anyhow. The 4 consecutive terms is very appealing.

From what I have heard Nursing school is a ton of reading and self study. Is that true? Are the lectures good or are they just boring. I heard some teachers either read from the book or off a powerpoint. Is that true? And, do you feel that there is too much information that you got out of lectures that you would have missed on your own, if you were in the online program?

I need the dirt on the whole situation. I don't want to get into the online program and wish I had done the traditional program. I am a 4.0 student (as I should be considering I don't work) and I am very hard working and motivated.

Thanks in advance!

Ya, same, wasnt competitive then. But I went into student services, talked to a counselor, she handed me a sheet that stated what courses/tests one had to complete. As I competed those tasks, i checked them off. Then i went back to see a counselor, she quickly double checked everything, said it looked fine, BUT would do a more in depth verification. If there were problems, they would contact me, if no problems, I should receive a Application for the nursing program--which I did. Mailed that off, and then I got a package, welcoming me to the program, and it gave me 3 choices 1)traditional, 2) Accelerated, or 3) Online. I choose traditional and mailed it back! Was fairly simple. I knew back in April 2007 (maybe earlier?? or later, not sure) that I was accepted for the Fall 2007 program.

The checklist is pretty staright forward on what you have to get completed, ie SDV 101, computer proficiency exam (held at any NVCC testing centre) etc etc

here is the checklist--keep in mind things may have changed!!

thanks Flames, I thought that was how it went but I just wanted to make sure. By the time the nursing program starts (Summer 09) I will have completed every single test, prereq and supporting course to include a physical, immunizations, and BLS class. I have had this all mapped out for a while. It's only been a little over a year since I started preparing for applying but I am so prepared and so ready to get on with the real deal. I guess you could say that I am a little obsessed, but more than that I am just enthusiastic.

Just curious what exactly is the application? The brochure says "The application includes the original approved Checklist, the Nursing Program application, a copy of the Nursing Pre-

Admission Test results with passing scores, and a NOVA unofficial transcript."

But I want to know what is the "Nursing program application? Is there an essay etc.?

You guys are great.

i didnt do an essay!! Pretty much what you mentioned, just filling out perosnal info, was fairly basic, name addy, etc,I dont recall having to do anything too special. Make sure u make a photocopy for ur own records

OK, Cool. I am all done asking questions for now. I just don't like talking to the people at the school. They always guide me to the same person over and over and I don't want to talk to that particular person every time I want to talk to different people, cause you never know who is going to bring some new info to the table.

And I hear ya on photocopying for your own records. The military loses EVERYTHING. :banghead:

I was in the Canadian military for nearly 15 years

Good for you, that is awesome. I couldn't stand our military. I just felt like I never fit in and as though I was always misunderstood. Not to mention I worked with so many lazy people, and I was always the lowest ranking so when the people above me didn't want to work, I didn't work and then we would always get yelled at for not working. I couldn't work by myself either because we did construction. UGH. I'm looking forward to a career in nursing, where I can work with and without help. Plus I like to stay busy, it makes the day go by faster.

i did the Army, navy and Air force. Army was ok, fun to do when i was young. navy was so so--people were grwtat same rank, higer ups were idiots. Air Force rocked, loved flying in the P3C and everyone worked as a team, had a blast and miss it.

I went for a traditional program this year because I would like to have my summer off next year to give my family a break. However, I do have a long commute to Springfield (sometimes 1.5 h) and online program was very appealing to me too. Keep in mind that during summer semester you will lose a few weeks. You will have to do 16 week course in twelve weeks. I am sure you can do it.

Do not be alarmed that this year was competitive admission. If you have 4.0, do well on HESI, and have many classes already done, you will be just fine. Waiting for acceptance letter is hard even when you know that you most likely got in.

I am sure you already know that you will have to have your background check + drug test ($84), physical with immunizations, TB test, liability insurance ($29), CPR (85?), uniform ($59), lab kit ($54), stethoscope, duty shoes and God knows what else.

Good luck!

how did u do on ur hesi exam? im so eager to get in but thatz only if i can pass the hesi.. n e suggestions for the vocab part of the test?

I have to admit vocabulary part of HESI was the hardest part for me because English is not my native language. There were some words from the study guide, some from A&P, but there were also words I have never heard before. I just guessed. I scored 80 on vocabulary and 86 average. I am glad I had to take test only once.

If I remember it correctly, the test was three hours long and had four parts. I gave each part 45 minutes. I saved some time on vocabulary and used it for the reading part because it was longer. You don't have to do it, but it helped me a lot not to run out of time. Good luck!

Here are my scores: 88 vocab, 91.49 reading comprehension, and 96 on both Grammer and Math (92.87% overall)

This is what I did: I took every single word out of the grammer and vocab sections and practice quizzes, that I didn't know and studied them, as well as their synonyms. Plus I looked up commonly used medical terms like Q.I.D. and found their meaning as well.

Let me tell you, I was very scared of this test. It probably didn't help that I met a chick in my SDV 101 class, who failed it two times because of the vocab section. Who suggested that I take it a first time without studying just to "get a feel for it". HA-HA, I am SO glad I didn't take her advice! I read all four of the first sections of the study guide and I ended up getting scores I can be proud of.

If I wasn't clear enough, don't take advice from people who fail tests, do the opposite of what they do!

In my opinion, there are going to be words on the test that you just aren't going to know and there isn't a way to prepare for them. If it isn't in the study guide you either know it or you don't.

Good luck!

Wow, you really did do well on HESI! Good job!

I have met people who took it more than once too. I also met people who had score in high 90s! I agree, you have to be prepared for the test. One of my problems on a test day was that I had to drive for hour and half through the ice storm in February to get to Springfield. Not being used to long commutes, I was shaking by the time I got there. I was happy with my score, but of course could have done better.

Like that "good" advice about just taking it to test the waters, lol probably not great test taking strategy! We didnt have HESI, we still had TEAS, and Ican't recall of their was a vocabulary section or not. I recall, math, reading, and science.
