NVCC Online Nursing Program

U.S.A. Virginia

For those of you attending NVCCs nursing program; What are your thoughts on their online program? I am seriously considering applying for it rather than the traditional program. I have taken several classes online as well as some on campus and felt as though the classes taken on campus (especially NAS 161) required so much self study that I might as well have taken it online anyhow. The 4 consecutive terms is very appealing.

From what I have heard Nursing school is a ton of reading and self study. Is that true? Are the lectures good or are they just boring. I heard some teachers either read from the book or off a powerpoint. Is that true? And, do you feel that there is too much information that you got out of lectures that you would have missed on your own, if you were in the online program?

I need the dirt on the whole situation. I don't want to get into the online program and wish I had done the traditional program. I am a 4.0 student (as I should be considering I don't work) and I am very hard working and motivated.

Thanks in advance!

I have a 3.9 and I got a 92% overall on the HESI. I think I have a very good chance and I was starting to think the other day that getting into the program doesn't even seem to be the hard part. Getting through the program and graduating poses a much larger challenge!

I know what you mean about giving your family a break. I took the 6 week NAS 161 at Annandale and that was intense. My hubby and I carpooled since he works near the school so I ended up being at the school all day M-Th for 6 weeks. It worked great because I studied during the time that I wasn't in class but it was very demanding and I felt like I barely saw my family.

Thats the one reason why i didnt take NUR 216 online--for the computer exams, lol I prefer to go over with pencil!! Would be nice knowing ur mark right away. We wait a week!!

OK, I have another question..

I read that they don't do the whole first come-first served thing for the nursing program. Her is my concern. I will be applying for in-state exactly one year from moving here (February 23rd). The application deadline isn't until March 15th or 19th, I can't remember. SO, should I wait to submit my checklist and application until after I am awarded residency through the school so that I am not discriminated against based on my status. OR should I do one checklist as early as possible and then do another one after I am awarded residency?

My understanding is that you submit your checklist and then after it is approved they send you some information about how to put together your actual application that will be used and compared against others for admission into the program.

Basically any information (other than the things I have read in all the brochures, a million times) about the whole application process would be helpful.

I know you guys are laughing at me right now but this really is a concern of mine.

That is a good question. I am not laughing. :) I wonder when they take status into consideration? My guess it is in the end when they decide who is on a top of the list. I would call and ask just to be safe.

Ya best to call. I arrived here from Canada, and they based my residency on my wife's status. Believe I had to bring in her last State income tax paperwork.

I went into the school to find an answer, and they answered that question very easily, so Im sure if you went in or called, they could assist you. But if ur 1 yr residency is in Feb 2009, I would think you would be fine as classes dont start till the Fall.

I think classes for on line nursing will start in May. I am not 100 percent sure. But, in any case, there is plenty of time to apply.

When did last years ONLINE course start? When I got the acceptance letter into the program, it gave us 3 choices 1) traditional 2) acclerated held at Arlington campus and 3) online--which I believe didnt start until Jan 2008 (we --traditional--started Aug 2007)

How do you write ur exams for the ONLINE course? at home via blackboard,, or testing centre? Reason why I ask, for the NUR 216 lecture that is online, the staff were saying students may write the majority of exams from home!!!! Not sure how that would work

Yes, we do the exams from home except the midterm or final. The rationale I think is that the exams take so long and you only have so much time to take them, that if you went and looked stuff up, you wouldn't be able to complete the exams on time. It's on the honor code. We have had plenty of people not make it through the first couple of semesters, so I think the system is working pretty well.

The current online program started January 2008, but they have said the next one will start in May 09.

if people can cheat they will, lol is it like 1 question per page? can u go back and double check ur work? Too easy yo have someone else there with a book and assist ya. Yes, it normally does take the full hour to write an exam. I think i'm better off going to class, lol even though I dont pay that much attention.

I know nursing is a much harder subject but I have had more than a few pre-reqs like that (Not at NVCC), it was an online test but there wasn't enough time to look up stuff. Besides, from what everyone says it seems like most of the questions on a nursing tests don't have cut and dry answers, in other words, all the answers are right but one is more right than the others. And nothing that the book would be able to tell you.

I know I already asked this question but nobody really answered it. Can you guys give me your personal experience with the nursing application process.

It depends, one semester it was one question per page and one semester it was just one page with 50 questions.

I am sure there are people who would find a way to cheat, I am just not sure how they would do so. Maybe I am just not a creative enough thinker. :chuckle

My experience was that it was pretty straightforward and what they said it would be. I didn't apply when it was "competitive" though, so i don't know what it's like now.
