NVCC MEC nursing fall '17

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all,

i submitted my app for the fall nursing program a week and a half ago so I figured I'd start a forum for all the NVCC MEC nursing applicants to communicate with each other while we anxiously wait for our faith. If anyone in the program or have graduated from the program would like to give some advice, please do!

I wonder why all the changes and mismatched information. They received the applications earlier this year and by today last year (I just saw) they posted on the MEC blog that decisions would be given out June 2 (today) last year. Well that is truly disappointing...

Thanks for the info. At least we can rest easy tonight.

Looking ahead, has anyone applied to a backup school, or would you just re-apply at NVCC if you don't get in this time?

I've been admitted to the ABSN program at Shenandoah University & have been offered a partial scholarship & grants, but I'm torn about what to do. On one hand, I'd get to start nursing school this fall, but on the other hand, even with a scholarship & grants, it's still crazy expensive. Plus, it's accelerated, which makes working a lot harder.

But, even being a local resident with a 4.0 & decent TEAS scores, I'm not sure I'll ever get in to NVCC at this rate, given the current ratio of applicants to seats.

ViviennesHeart - Actually by June 2nd last year, they were only 50% done with the processing emails! They didn't get decisions back until June 23rd.

NightOwlGirl, I think you should go for the ABSN program at shenandoah. It's for sure more expensive, but as an RN with a BSN you would already be more likely to get a job + will probably get paid slighlty more than with an ADN. Also, that way you wouldn't have to worry about going back to school later in life if you ever wanted to go back and get your BSN! I mean, that's what I would do but I guess everyone has different lifestyles and life situations so it might not be the best move for you. Just depends on you!

I personally made the decision to do nursing only in December. I took all of the prereqs in 8 week sessions for the NVCC program. I was switching from International Relations, which I loved and did well in, but almost none of the credits are necessary for Nursing haha. If I had the prereqs for a BSN program I would definitely try to transfer to one, but at this point it makes more sense for me to get my ADN and then soon after do an accelerated RN to BSN program.

ViviennesHeart - I see the post you're referring to and they meant the processing emails, not the decision emails. I only know that because I read the Fall 2016 forum and also went through their FB page lol

uggggh so frustrating! Welp, at least we know something. they havent put one poist up on facebook about anything nursing related unless its jobs, as we all know, but its interesting that one person yesterday said one thing and someone else today said another. Maybe we should all call and tally up the different responses LOL. Fingers crossed we hear somewhat soon because it seems if they were so swamped last year and learned from that experience, that they'd be more on the ball this year. I do wonder though, if this is student servicdes you all are talking to, how do they have any idea if the nursing department is directly processing applications? (once sent to said dept I mean)

I was only able to apply to nova this semester, but I have my bachelors degree. My pre reqs are old though, so I will likely retake A and P again this summer/fall, if I dont get in, and apply to all the accelerated BSN programs for Spring. I am looking at George Washington, George Mason, and Marymount. but honestly, while the BSN is really attractive, the amount of classes per semester is insane to me, and I have children and a husband in the military so doing something a little less fast paced is more what Im looking for. I do LOVE the idea of being done in 12-15 months though, but cost is a big factor.

I saw on a previous forum that two girls were wait listed, but maybe they have done away with that. entirely possible!

Is there any Lpn to Rn applicant ?

Specializes in Telemetry.

In the application packet it says they do not use a wait list.

CabeRNetMama -- I am in a similar situation (young daughter, husband will be overseas next year), so the slower pace of the NVCC program is much more my speed.

If I don't get in, however, I will power through the 15 month ABSN at Shenandoah. I considered applying to Mason, but a 12 month program seemed way too fast for me.

vg2481 -- I'd been debating it internally & have come to the same conclusion. Attending Shenandoah will be challenging, but worth it in the end. They've also offered me a significant discount, bringing the price down to 37K, which is still high, but a lot less than the 61K (plus fees) it would be otherwise.

Fingers crossed we all get in to NVCC though & this is a moot point.

Because I have a previous bachelor's, if I attend NVCC I am also considering the concurrent enrollment RN-BSN option with Old Dominion University, which would give me both nursing degrees (ASN + RN-BSN) in about two years. The ODU sections are done fully online & I can get in-state tuition, so it is a tempting prospect.

Did you know the Mason has a co-enrollement program similar to ODU? The program can be completed all online and designed to be completed within two years as well. You would finish with ASN + RN-BSN. I applied to go to Mason for the program and i'm waiting to hear back from NOVA before I decide what to do with my acceptance. If I don't make it into NOVA program I'll just wind up transferring in the FALL.
