Looking for some advice on my application. I received C in BIO 141 (took the accelerated course while working as a teacher last fall which wasn't a good idea). I am now taking BIO 142 and will likely end with a B. I will take PSY over the Summer. I have an undergraduate degree in special education where I took ENG and several humanities courses that I received B's and A's in. I ended with a GPA of 3.6. I have not yet taken the TEAS but will this Summer as well. I am wondering if its highly recommended that I take more of the co-requisites (BIO 150 and COM) prior to submitting my application this fall? I want to increase my chances as much as possible.

Hello @cumminsc13, We would point out our prior post describing the competitive criteria.

The weakest part of your application will be the BIO 141 grade. However, Having the CST and Humanities electives taken care of as well as BIO 142 will boost your submission. Based on the information you have provided we would recommend you do your best on the ATI TEAS as it sounds like it is the only outstanding prerequisite you have. Feel free to email our office at [email protected] for further help.

Because students are ranked on one of four factors the TEAS Scores of those accepted will have a wide range. If you have not maxed out an area that points are assigned for, it makes sense to consider that area as a weak part of your application. That might mean retaking a course if you had the minimum grade, or taking additional co-requisites or improving your ATI TEAS.

For example, a student with a

  • C in BIO 141
  • C in PSY 230
  • Maximum on the TEAS
  • Completed all co-requisite courses

might be ranked similarly to someone that

  • An A in BIO 141
  • An A in PSY 230
  • Scored the minimum TEAS Scores
  • Did not complete any co-requisite courses

As an applicant, you want to focus on improving in one or all areas.

How Students are Ranked

Grade in BIO 141

Note: If the minimum grade for entry is a "C" then no extra point is awarded for meeting the minimum.

Grade in PSY 230

Note: If the minimum grade for entry is a "C" then no extra point is awarded for meeting the minimum.

Scores on the ATI TEAS

Completion of any or all of the Co-requisite courses

CST elective, humanities elective, BIO 142 and BIO 150.

Note: It is not required that you complete the co-requisite courses prior to applying. However, if you are weak in the other areas it is not a bad idea to knock out some of the co-requisites.

Those are the four categories that students are awarded points on. our blog post, https://blogs.nvcc.edu/mecexchange/2019/02/27/am-I-a-competitive-applicant/ is updated when criteria change, so we encourage you to review it for more details.

Can we still go and take the TEAS at the testing center ? The email said students should not return to campus until notified. But I want to know if the testing center will remain open.

We have been informed that testing will be closed until at least April 4. NOVA will accept TEAS scores taken at testing sites outside of NOVA. It just has to be the latest TEAS at the ADN or above level.

What other places can we take the TEAS at? Thank you.

You would need to check on the ATI TEAS website for testing locations. We do not have a list.

thanks for updating this thread!!

just submitted my application, though I wish I'd been able to retake the TEAS. I know there must be alternative testing methods but everything is so chaotic right now. fingers crossed and good luck to everyone!

ATI has listed sites, however, you'd have to check one by one to see if they're even open. Due to government orders, you may not be able to access testing sites.

Hi @MEC Counselor,

I saw that the deadline for applications has been extended, does that mean decisions will go out much later as well?

Thanks!

We should still be sending them out in May. It might delay it by a week. But the closure has not impacted processing applications.
