Hagerstown CC RN program Fall 2020
Hi Carmen! I'll be joining you at HCC in the Fall so I don't have any advice for you, just wanted to say hi! I have no clue what to expect, especially if we're still online in the Fall! Out of curiosity, do you still have the list of supplies we need for the program that the sent us w/ our acceptance letters? I don't have mine anymore and can't remember what was on it. All I remember is stethoscope and blood pressure cuff LOL. CONGRATS!

Montgomery College Nursing Fall 2020
Thanks! I'll look into it! Do the shoes have to be all leather? We don't need a blood pressure cuff, pen light, surgical scissors or any other supplies other than a stethoscope? Those things were on Hagerstown's list, but I won't purchase yet if MC doesn't require them until decisions go out! Are there any reference books or "pocket guides" that you recommend that aren't required but have been helpful to you?

Montgomery College Nursing Fall 2020
@cmg9311 hi again! Thanks for all of the info so far! It’s nice knowing there are people in similar situations (retaking courses) succeeding in the program! It’s definitely encouraging! I do actually have another question... As far as expenses go, what extra things (aside from tuition and books) were you responsible for to start? Castlebranch, immunizations, uniforms, stethoscope, any other “supplies”? As far as the uniform, do we get it all through the school or do we have to go to a uniform store? If so, what color? Lastly, specific shoe requirements for clinicals? I realize I’m getting way ahead of myself buuuuut it would be nice to get an idea so I can anticipate these expenses sooner rather than later...whether that be this fall or Spring or at Hagerstown. ??♀️ LOL Oh, and do you recommend anyone in particular for Micro? ? thanks again for letting us pick your brain!

Thanks for that! ? Did you have other courses to take other than your Nursing courses? Like the foundations courses, psychs, soc, etc. etc. or did you complete this prior to starting the program? I saw that you're doing the dual enrollment program, I'm hoping to also. Is acceptance to the program very slim? It's awesome that you learned that early on and have made it as far as you have already! Do you work also? I don't plan to but do you think it is manageable?

Montgomery College Nursing Fall 2020
@cmg9311 Hi! Is there anything that you wish you would've known before starting the Nursing program that you know now thats worth noting? Also, do you know what the stats were of your cohort? TEAS scores? prerequisite grades? GPA? etc. Anything helps as I am anxiously waiting for the end of the month! thanks ?

@Tatiana Berrios I used the same book and it was very helpful but honestly, I concentrated on the reading part the least and somehow scored really well on it. My advice when taking the TEAS as a whole is to not second-guess yourself. It is one thing for one answer to be a "better" answer than another but dont over think it! What I noticed with the TEAS, is there were many questions that had 1 completely wrong response, 1 half right, half wrong response, and a correct answer then a more correct answer. That was the most frustrating part for me!

@Queen B In the info session I went to, the packet they passed out said that prior degrees are worth 5 points, not 3. Eng 101 was the prerequisite not 102/103, those were a priority course but not required to apply. So for the "Priority courses completed" part of the point system, you could earn 4, 2, or 0 points, now it's 4 or none. Taking Patho if your A&P was expired wasn't a thing...I don't think, but that didn't apply to me so I didn't make note of it...I took patho anyway and I'm so glad I did, it was super interesting and I learned ALOT! And yeah, they warned us too, of the success rate of the dual enrollment program. Thankfully, I have all foundation courses done for both programs, short of micro and chem but I plan to have those completed before starting the program in the Fall so I'll only have to take NURSING courses and worry about clinicals. I also plan not to work during the program, but with COVID, I'll have to reevaluate my situation once it all settles, so who knows... Apparently, Hagerstown just worked out a dual enrollment program with UMD to start this year as well, they announced that at their info session earlier this year.

@Tatiana Berrios When did you get the information about MC not liking when you repeat a course? That's new to me...I know it counts against you in terms of ranking you when they count how many attempts it takes to pass a prerequisite or priority course, but I never had the impression they discourage it? Just curious where/who you heard that from! I know people who retook micro because they got a C in it the first time and it helped them b/c it helped them stay above the 2.5 GPA requirement while in the nursing program. @zbarrie From what I've read online, "*BIOL 212 and 213 older than five years of the application date may only be accepted upon permission of the program coordinator. Nursing applicants with BIOL 212 & 213 older than five years of the application date must take BIOL228. Students who transfer to Montgomery College with BIOL212 and/or BIOL 213 do not need to complete BIOL 150. **BIOL 150 IS A PRE-REQUISITE FOR BIOL 212" You dont have to retake BIOL 212 but you do need to take 228 which is Patho and is SO MUCH FUN! I took it and highly recommend it, I learned ALOT and I feel like it gave me at snapshot of what Nursing courses will be like, it was very specific and applicable to the field! Does anyone know if BIOL 150 is calculated in your science GPA on your nursing application? Thanks!

Ha thanks for the encouragement! Those are awesome scores! The prerequisites are a little different from the packet I looked at when I went to an info session in the fall to the one that's posted on the website now. Who knows? When did you go to an info session? That stinks! I've only taken the test at MC so I haven't seen anything else! Definitely re-test! ?

@QueenB Thank you! I live in Rockville, so MC would be much more convenient but we will see. I am super nervous my app isn't competitive enough though...hate to admit, I got a C in A&P I ?, but A's and B's in the other prereqs. I'm hoping my TEAS scores and GPA will make up for that but who knows how the rankings will look. How do you feel about your application? Oh no! I bet it was nerves! I'm sure you'll get it next time! When are you able to take it again? Now, you know what to expect!
