Nursing Unions

Nurses Union

Published

I am looking for information regarding nursing unions... the advantages, disadvantages, how they work, etc.

I am in my last semester of a BSN program and this info will help me to prepare for a debate. I have to argue AGAINST professional nursing unions. Why should we not have them?????

Thanks!-NSCU RN

The slideshow discusses the impacts within populations of inequality between the states.

The states with the greatest inequality have the worst outcomes.

Inequality as compared to what? So are we to move to a communistic state so that all incomes are the same? Am I supposed to feel poorly because I make more than others around me? If unions are about equalizing income, I definitely don't want to be a part of them.

Of course not.

You should be proud of the advanced practice care you provide to children. And you should be well compensated.

But banking executives who received bonuses that exceeded the amount of profit generated by their banks do nothing useful.

For the most part it is not working people who have the most money

What do the bank executives have to do with nursing unions? There are many examples of greed seen throughout the major industries with CEO compensation at an all time high, etc, etc. This happens everywhere..not just in RTW states.

I apologise. I was trying to say that nurse practitioners perform valuable work. I think most are under paid for what they do.

To paraphrase what I think Onekidneynurse alluded to life and health are invaluable. No amount of money can truly compensate those who save lives and provide comfort.

Thank you for what you do!

Please don't put words in my mouth. I wasn't referring to medical compnsation I was referring to what the individual feels his/her life is worth. Don't confuse the two. It's interesting that people will pay $30,000 for a new car but won't pay $50 for a life saving med. So how they seem to value the car more than their life. That was my point.

Do you think there are people in this country who can afford a $30k car but can't afford a $50 medication to save their life? What's the point in having the car if you're dead?

do cottage hospital's charges make sense?

wednesday, january 6, 2010

by faith ozan

my 24-year-old son was a patient at santa barbara cottage hospital last winter and received great care. he had complications from a dental infection and after emergency-room visits recommended by his dentist, a tooth was pulled and my son was admitted to the hospital for two nights for intravenous antibiotics. thankfully, the staff and the medicine got things under control and my son was fine. it's the bill, now, that's the problem.

i was surprised to learn from a collection agency statement that santa barbara cottage hospital marks up the cost of common antibiotics by almost 3,000 percent, and also that they defend the charges. this is an issue for us because the main reason my son was in the hospital was for antibiotics, and because the blue shield of california policy we buy requires he pay 30 percent of approved costs after deductible....

...i found that one unit of ampicillin/sulbactam, for example, cost the hospital $10, but they charged my son $378; eight units cost the hospital $80, but they charged $3,024 for it. or a one-gram vancomycin injection costs the hospital $9.75 per unit, and they charged my son $387. five shots cost the hospital $48.75, but they charged my son $1,935. same with moxifloxacin iv, 400 mg: it costs the hospital $43.75, but they charge the patient $557. all together, the total hospital cost for medication for my son's entire stay (according to the abx guide) was $187.54, and the total santa barbara cottage hospital charged my son was $5,625. these are all very common antibiotics, and the markup was 2,999 percent

Yes I do. I believe that alot of middle class people aren't near as ultruistic as they'd like us to believe. I believe that many think UHC will bring down their cost of medical care. That their premiums will be lower. That drug costs will be lower or free. In many UHC countries the citizens pay little to nothing for their care. I believe Americans are gonna be in for a big shock. First of all this program won't go into effect for 4 years. But we will start paying for it immediately. What happens if you die within the next 4 years. You've paid for naught. And many are being told they can keep the insurance they have but won't have pre existing clauses and they won't be cut off if they use it. They will still have the same deductiables and co-pays.

I believe many people who pay $30K for a car would love to have cheap drugs. Are you saying that those who pay $30k cars don't want cheap drugs? I don't think so.

UM they bought the car without thinking forward and buying health insurance just in case. That's irresponible. And that is part of the healthcare systems problems.
