Maybe appropriate for the Ill, Ca, and ME forums, but since 'across the nation' doesn't mean Texas, it's off-forum.

I am, personally, very much in favor of nursing unions, IF they represent nurses interests and are not, in reality, self serving and futhering the unjust goals of the health care industry!

From the web site of the SEIU, I deteremined that this union was very much in favor of both illegal immigration and the immigration of foreign nurses into the USA. This being the case, I hesitate to endorse this particular union which is, without a doubt, supporting an political position that is both enimical to the nursing profession and very much in support of the unjust goals of the health care industry.

Unions are all about dues and membership, nothing more. In the competitive healthcare industry where there are shortages in clinicians, only ridiculously short sighted employers don't make good faith efforts to treat their nurses and other professional employees well. If you aren't valued and respected, then go someplace where you are. I have seen the result of unions--dues, fines, fees, assessments, as well as loss of freedom, individual merit, autonomy. My professionalism and integrity mean too much to me to turn my voice and my choice over to someone else. You need to look no further than the impact unions have had on the airline and auto industries .

Yeah ... this is pretty stupid on the union's part. Their argument is that illegals bring down wages and benefits and, making them legal will help eliminate this problem. Of course, this doesn't apply to nurses because illegals can't do an RN's job. That's part of the problem of having a union the represents a bunch of workers, not just nurses.

But, you know what ... I'm probably going to be a member of SEIU. Why? Nobody else can beat the salary and benefits that they've negotiated in my area. They just got another pay raise and, they've done a really good job of protecting retirement benefits, which is really important to me so ... I'm going with the wolves in sheep's clothing.

In the end, I really don't care about union politics, I care about my paycheck.

This little dot sums up EXACTLY my opinion of the concept of unions in Texas.

I don't know about the number that responded in San Antonio but when when the AFL-CIO responded to the plight of Corpus Christi, TX. nurses year before last the CITY was brought to its knees and everyone got a $4.00 per hr. increase. That one was a wildcat walk-out. There is strength in numbers and sometimes one must put feet to one's prayers.

"The SEIU seeks to unionize just about anyone. In 1997 Local 790 organized strippers from the Lusty Lady peep show in San Francisco." (from unionfacts.com)

No question: It's about the membership dues.

No question: It's about the membership dues.

But it's also about pay raises. The average union worker makes $9K more than their non-union counterpart. The average union RN makes $6K more than non-union RN's.

My husband pays $700 a year in SEIU union dues. If you want to assume that the union worker only does $6K better, that's an 850 percent rate of return on your investment. Try investing $700 in the stock market and getting $6K back at the end of year. You'd be lucky to get 20 percent or $140 back.

And, he's getting a $1K bonus with the new union contract. SEIU is not deducting dues from that bonus so ... it's not always about dues.

Don't get me wrong ... I think there's a lot of problems with unions, but it's not all black and white either. There are benefits.

The bottom line is your paycheck. If they get you a better pay check then it's worth it. If you don't, then it's not. In my area, it's definitely worth the union dues money. You make anywhere from $4 to $8 more an hour with unions than without them.

As for the strippers in San Fran, I lived there when that was happening. If you've ever lived in San Francisco ... this wouldn't be a surprize at all. If strippers want to unionize ... what's wrong with that?

;)

I agree it is neither black nor white; in fact, I was brought up in a union family in the 60s. As a general rule, I believe that unions served a useful purpose historically when labor laws were clearly one sided and before many of the legistlative changes we have seen over the past 20 years (FMLA, ADA etc.) have advanced in the US. However it is a new millenium and the fact that labor membership is at an all time low in the US speaks volumes. Fewer than 1 in 5/6 US workers are reprsetned by unions because they have come largely unnecessary in the US today and the scandals involving them and their scary tactics turned off the american worker. (Yes, a generalization based on whole, there are surely exceptions to this statement.) I'm sorry that your husband worked somewhere that didn't value him or the workers to pay them fairly and treat them appropriately; I'm glad that situation was rectified for him. If it were me, I would leave and find a situation where I was respected and treated appropriately. As a professional, I'm not one to give away my voice or my vote to someone else to speak for me. And you are known by the company you keep......be it strippers, lawyers or used car salesmen!:) Gotta go feed the kids lunch. Have a great day!
