Huge oversimplification. Unions also represent, garment workers, steelworkers, clerks, teachers, police officers, and various other employees that are hardworking self-sacrificing individuals. Companies often have no since of loyalty to their employees and even those that do cannot compete if they pay or treat their employees fairly. Hospital systems, insurance companies and drug companies are often in colution with each other to guarentee profits to shareholders at the expense of patients and those individuals that care for them. I may be Pollyanna but I know that the power of many is greater than the power of one unless of course we are speaking of the Creator and he gave us the good sense to know when to call in the big guns to negotiate. B'lieve I'll hedge my bets and throw in with the working man.

And you are known by the company you keep......be it strippers, lawyers or used car salesmen!:)

I seriously doubt that one strip club going union in San Fran is going to have a negative impact on the image of nursing ... :rolleyes:

There is a difference in unions and SEIU has not had the employee and nurses best interest in mind. Just paying dues and sitting in the lounge chair on the weekends is not proactive memebership. If you don't know who represents you in union,city,county,state and federal level is not good for you or your patients.

Bill Frist,son of the founder of HCA and Senate majority leader needs to go back to TN and wrote books by ghost writers preening himself and his selfish best interest. This is an example of elections and weatlh gone wild.

Know what unions,political leaders and nursing organizations are in your best interest at bedside and for hospitalized friends and family. What is your $700 getting you a year? Real retirement? Real and lifetime health coverage? Legal representation? Due process with termination,performance evaluations or salary structure for longievity?

I have a Texas nursing license and a right to work state with the Texas Hospital assocaition in charge. You need Migraine Excedrin or just stick your head in the sand. I just might take the SEIU with its faults. CNA has replaced SEIU in CA with severval hospitals. AFL-CIO/CNA partnership is different than Jimmie Hoffa's days. The AFL-CIO President is more boots in the sand than the others because anybody can see that the old way didn't work. I am for safe staffing. I have worked in CA union hospitals. I have seen SEIU,CNA and no unions CA hospitals. Unions are not perfect but getting safe staffing ratios and real whistleblower legislation is real goal.
