I'm 36 and applying to RN programs for the 3rd time and LVN programs for the first time. I hoping to get in any way I can! I'm married and have two little lights of my life who are 5 and 3.
In the last year after finishing my pre-reqs I got my C.N.A. and E.M.T. which has been fun and fulfilling. I hope to get a job this summer and stay busy with my family while I wait to be accepted. If everything had gone as planned since I went back to school 3 yrs ago I thought that I would have been graduating this Dec or May of 09. No such luck and it looks like I still have a long road ahead so I'm trying to stay positive that this will happen for me someday.
Good luck to everyone on following your dreams! :redpinkhe
Hi - I'm here....I'll be 37 (!) this fall, just finished the LPN program and trying to decide which LPN to RN Bridge program to attend.
I spent most of my life raising seven kiddos, they are all a bit older now, though I can't say it's an easier - in fact I think it's more difficult now. They are 20, 18 (but without use of body from waist down, health and learning probs) 17, 16, 14, 12 and 11.
Just wanted to say "hi" and add myself to the list of awesome older students!
I am so thankful for this site. I am 44, married with 2 kids (13 & 11) and just decided to go back to school for a Nursing carrer. I have been in the legal industry - secretary - for over 20 years now and do NOT want to retire doing this. I thought that at my age it was too late to even "consider" this but now I see that it's NOT! Thanks again for all the good stories shared out there! :-)

Wow.....I tip my hat to you!!! That is awesome! :nuke:
I may be the oldest male entering a 2 year nursing program. 55. I would appreciate any feedback.
I had over a 30 year successful management career in another field--which I no longer have passion in. I could make much more money in that field than nursing. What I want is a new career that helps people in a direct and "real" way. I do not want to retire at 65--I want to work as long as I can where I would have flexibility knowing what I do makes a "real" difference in other peoples lives. I had a Bachelor degree when I was 22. At the age of 50 I left my job with my families support and went back to school taking 2 ANP, Microbiology, Life Span Psych, Organic Chemistry, Anthropology, Nutrition. I got great grades. I then applied to several schools hoping I would be accepted to a BSN program. I also took a CNA course for $400 and worked at Nursing Home for 2 months--I liked my CNA experience but did not want to work while going to school--I now know this is a mistake because the more experience you have the less anxiety you will have. I also volunteer for Hospice. I did not make the cut at 2 BSN schools--most likely because of the essay but the most expensive school--$40,000 a year accepted me. At the same time 2 other ADN programs accepted me. I decided to go to the best ADN program in the Fall of 2005 due to cost. I successfully passed my first quarter--barely--It was tough but I greatly enjoyed it. The first month I had a family crises which requried my assistance and had to leave and go back to my first career to help my family. Now I can go back and have been accepted in the fall of 2008 of a different ADN program at a school closer to my home and feel the need to start at the beginning. I left my job and now this summer I am looking to find a CNA job in a hospital and my plans are to work 1-2 days a week while I go to school to bolster my confidence. My plans are when I graduate to eventually work in hospice after gaining varied experience.
I was way more concerned about being older male nursing student when I was 50--due to confidence and ego. My success plan this time around is to take life day by day with gratitude and make it the best I can be. My goal is to Pass each quarter, avoid dramas that happen in class and truly "connect" with the experience.
At the Age of 57 I pray I will be a practicing Novice Nurse. I think this website will help me. My goal and to do whatever it takes to stick it out and make it through. It is all about the patient.:wink2:

Hello to everyone, this website has been a wonderful find and I love this particular thread. I am 37 and am starting ADN program Aug 08. I am married to a wonderful, helpful angel of a husband and have a 10yo daughter. I work full time right now but plan on cutting back to part time which will lead to all of us eating mac and cheese and hot dogs for two years! You do what you have to do, right?
I know there are a lot of other people our age going back to school for 1st degrees or additional degrees or whatever the case may be. I wish I had done this sooner but if I did, I don't know that I would have succeeded then. At this age, I am so ready to start a new chapter and finally knowing what I want to do when I grow up sure helps!
