Nursing Students: good/bad moments

good: correctly catheterizing a woman in the er minutes before she was airlifted (intense!)

bad: procrastinating and almost passing a med incorrectly (phew!)

Robin - we know how you feel! Hang in there, it will get better. At our school, they accepted 100 applicants and the lowest GPA this year was 3.5 - now we are all of the opinion that they took a bunch of average/above average intelligent people and turned us all into a bunch of blithering idiots. You're not alone and it will make sense!!!

Best: Having a patient ask me to give her a hug before I leave and telling me that I've brightened her day. Also, having an agitated patient calm down and focus on me so we could carry out an NG insertion and morning care when I "discovered" the magic elixir she needed - the human touch. It's amazing what a little stroke to the hair and a warm touch on the arm can do!

Worst: Going to check my grades after our finals (they were posted each day for that day's final) and running into people who hadn't passed. That's a terrible feeling, especially when they ask you what your grade was...makes your heart break for them.

I know what you mean about the last grade postings...here is my journal entry for that day:

The aftermath of the pharmacology exam--

The aftermath of the pharmacology exam resembled a funeral. One by one we filed from the classroom after saying goodbye to our last test. Small groups gathered in the hall and the cafeteria, the mood was not joyous, some were sad, some were crying, some were just quietly contemplating their fate. The grades were handed back from yesterdays fundamentals class...at least one person did not make it....one person, out of 30, got an "A" for the class. The remainder of the causalities will be known tomorrow when the pharm grades are posted. After about an hour the last of the small groups were leaving. Some were to gather at a restaurant for a margarita, some going home...maybe to begin cleaning the house that had been neglected for the last 16 weeks. Yes, it reminded me of a funeral...we just won't know until tomorrow who died. Hopefully the survivors will be able to celebrate.....and hopefully, sometime over the next four weeks...begin to look forward to the second semester of the nursing program....

Worst: The "drill sergeant" type nursing instructor I had for my very first semester. She was intimidating, told me she didn't think I was the right type of person for nursing, and critisized me in my final eval for my shoelaces not being white enough......could it have been because I walked from my car in the parking lot in the pouring rain that morning??? Geeesh. What a hag! Out of seven students on my clinical day...only two of us passed. Took the next year and a half of school to get over the IBS I suffered before every clinical.

Best: Walking across that stage and graduating ....right in front of that same hag instructor!! What a high that was. (Not to mention, having wonderful evals from my employers ever since.)

Who gives a rat's patootie about white shoelaces anymore, guys?? The shoes I have now don't even have laces........they're Klogs for cryin' out loud.

Best: A nurse telling me she thinks I will make an exellent nurse.

Worst: Failing my math med test twice and having to pass the third time or I have to leave the program! (THIS IS A CURRENT SITUATION)

Worst: I think that experience is yet to come and I will cross that bridge then.
