Nursing student: Job offer starting same day as required NCLEX review

Published

I am a nursing student who will graduate in January 2016. I have been offered a job at a major hospital and it is my dream job. It is an internship for new grads and this opportunity will never be available to me again

problem: after graduation we have to go back for NCLEX review and Hesi exam for 4 days. This is not part of my grade. I have taken practice Hesi at school and scored highest in my class. Starting the same day I would start my new dream job. So far the school is not budging...saying if I don't go I won't be able to take my NCLEX.

i am beside myself that I may not be able to take this job. They are hiring a group of grad nurses to all start at the same time

advice please

You didn't interview yet?

Unless you have an offer letter in hand, then at this point the dilemma is out of your hands-you don't even know if you have the position, nor if you will never get the chance to work at your dream job; how can you be sure you won't get a chance AFTER you pass your boards-something that I'm sure will be required for your internship as a newly graduated nurse.

At this point, your best bet is to take the HESI and be on your way in becoming a licensed nurse-door will continue to open when you have your license in hand.

i am quite sure I will be offered the job. I will not get the chance to work at this dream job because it is an internship for graduate nurses only. Not licensed rn's. After passing boards I will not be considered a graduate nurse...I will be considered a BSN. Passing boards is not a requirement to get hired into this job. Passing it within 60 days is the requirement.

I am confused by what you are saying about being a graduate nurse and then a BSN after you take NCLEX. You will still be a new grad nurse after boards. Also, our nursing school had the same requirement for graduation, we had to acutally attend an NCLEX review course and score a certain percentage on the ATI exit exam before we could graduate and think of sitting for boards. It sounds like this is the case for your school so it will not matter if you get the dream job offer or not, if you do not complete the requirements of school, you cannot sit for boards and will not become a nurse.

Here in the state of Michigan you are hired as a graduate nurse (meaning you didn't take your boards yet) once you pass your boards you stay in the position you were hired for but now you are legally an RN. Of course I know I have to fulfill and complete the requirements so that I can sit and take my boards. Problem is this job starts the same week as the NCLEX review and practice Hesi. I was hoping I could work something out so I didn't have to turn down this job. Especially since I have already taken Hesi and scored highest in my class.

We all understand what you want. The problem is, none of us can truly advise what can be done. Only your school can. You don't take that review course, then you don't sit for NCLEX and don't become an RN. The choice is very simple. Go to the review course. If you get this graduate nurse job, then can't sit for NCLEX, you will lose your job anyway.

Your inly hope hope is if the school can make an exception for you or change th days of the review course. But again, no one here can say here nor there if that can happen. You need to talk to the school.

We we all get this is your dream job. But that is completely besides the point. If you don't qualify for NCLEX you lose the dream job anyway.

Also consider, if this facility hire graduate nurses, then they likely have a new grad program for licensed RNs as well. If not, many other facilities to. This isn't the only job out there.

There will be other job offers and opportunities. Also please understand you can't guarantee you will pass your NCLEX. I suggest finishing your school requirements. Also you may need your school as a reference for jobs so you may not want to ensure that you leave a good impression on your school admin

They may have multiple start dates for the new grad program, too. Is the hospital and your school in the same town? There are likely others who have applied to the position as well and the school/hospital may have some sort of relationship that would allow you to start during the next residency start date since you will not have completed school requirements by this one.

Mrs Boots We don't all understand what I want because someone said they were confused. It's not very simple at all. The review class is 4 days. If I could get out of even one of the days of review I could tell my potential employer that and maybe they can work with me. Of course I have to do everything to sit for NCLEX that is a no-brainer. Hopefully the potential employer will understand this and help me out. You say my only choice is to go to the review course and then in the next statement you say maybe my school will make an exception. I realize I won't get a positive answer on here....that would be silly to think. Glad you get that this is my dream job and OBVIOUSLY if I don't qualify for NCLEX I would lose the job. You are stating the obvious And contradicting yourself. Thanks but no thanks. Also thought that maybe I might be able to miss the review and take HESI on the last day since I did get the top score in my class on the HESI that I already took.

Unfortunately there is only one start date and they aren't in the same town :(.

Good point about the reference aspect. I scored very high on HESI so will most likely pass NCLEX but of course you never know. I will definitely finish school requirements. I don't understand why the review course and HESI is a month after we graduate though.

I understand where you coming from. My program held NCLEX apps for 21 days. It was very frustrating.

No no need to be incredibly rude. But your reaction to my post is your problem and not mine. You are asking us to tell you what you want to hear and getting upset that we can't. I have not contradicts myself. You have just misinterpreted because it's not what you wanted to hear. Again, your issue and not mine.

I I will reiterate. This truly is simple and you are making it hard. Go to the review class or ask your school to let you out of it. Those are your options and no one here can give you an answer as to which will work out for you. Continuing to argue won't change that.
